  • WTF is this noise coming from the block... please helpppp

    Hey guys,

Drove the car last night just fine, tonight I start the car and I am greeted with a screwed up noise coming from the engine.

    Please listen to the sample.

Does anyone have any idea what this noise is?? I quickly recorded it and turned it off.

    Thanks

mmm... check that nothing is touching where it shouldnt - that belts etc arnt being interfered with, no loose hose touching anything etc.
    check oil level too

Can anyone confirm that the image is not normal?

I've never looked at a VW timing belt but have worked on heaps of Fiat's, Lancia's and Alfa's
The timing belt does always not run in the dead center of the wheel
If there was a problem it would be off the wheel quicker than Tony can put his foot in his mouth

          Listening to the audio recording,
there is a rapid and high pitched sound similar to parts interfering, it is concerning
Is this a manual - what happens if you push the clutch down? (checks the release bearing)

Here is an idea that may help - it's a bit daggy
Get a piece of wood - a broom stick or something
Press it against the water pump and then put your ear against the wood
Wood conducts sound really well and you will know when you've located the source
          Next try the alternator

Not much point putting it on the head or rocker cover as there are heaps of moving parts all making sound there
You need to know what is normal and what is bad to make sense out of sounds from that area

You really need somebody that can help to have a look at it - take it into the workshop

yeah i wouldn't be driving it mate. could be something as single as a heat shield loose, or it could be something much more serious. id get it checked asap. btw my cam belt looks the same as yours so i don't think its that

                Oh really?

The only reason I thought it was unusual is that I found an image of a passat 1.8t, and the timing belt is 100% on the sprocket....

That timing belt is the same width as the wheel - it would be in trouble if it was partly off the wheel
When the belt is more skinny than the wheel - it could be left/centre/right

as always internet diagnosis is careful guessing at best for most - martin's suggestion of taking it to proper help is best.

Let us know how it goes

Mate that noise sounds bad and should be looked at asap avoid driving it in my opinion,

As for the timimng belt question you had regarding fitment, The pic of the passat timing belt you posted is what they normally look like when original, You may have a non genuine belt fitted it looks to small in width??

Hey Guys, the issue has been resolved. THANK GOD

It was related to the timing belt tensioner. I had the timing belt, waterpump, tensioner etc changed at CVWC about 20000km ago. However Gareth informed me that someone had installed the Audi tensioner instead of the VW part. They look similar but there are differences of a few mm's that shows over time.

Anyway apart from the $86 to tow my car to CVWC, Gareth fixed it free of charge so I am appreciative of that. I am just glad that this was fixed before I went to the track, otherwise I might not have had an engine after the timing belt tensioner failed.

There is no difference between the Audi and VW ones ?
The difference is between the engines . The A3/Golf gti engines use one which have a washer on the back , hence the reason why the belt is sitting too far into the block and leaving the gap on the end . The other type used is on the Passat/a4 1.8t Early (AEB engine) .
