  • Suspension issue - please help

    Hey fellas.
    I've got a mk4 gti lowered on kwv1 coilovers.
And I'm suddenly hearing grinding when turning and squishing noises when going over bumps.
    Car is this low

And this is the gap regarding the top mounts

I recently put new top mount struts in and I understand there's meant to be a gap but that's at least 15mm.

Am I just too low to expect to not hear suspension/grinding ect.? Lol

tops look too high... even my 50,000km old mounts ones dont sit that high.
not really that low, check for rubbing (wheel on coilover/adjuster, tyre on coilover/adjuster, driveshaft on sway bar (will be ring on driveshaft))

as for the squishing noise... not sure, strut related? check for leaking from the seal?

^ Defiantly something going on with the tops.

I'd also check the strut top bearings

Yeh. Already done all that.. No idea why it sits so high.. Last coilovers were like that too.. It's almost like they sit too low in the spindle or the top hat on the coilovers are too high. Bearings are fine too.. All genuine parts so..
Sound has gone since I lifted it 2 threads. Stupid thing.

Also no rubbing anywhere. There's obligatory marks on the driveshaft but not from recent times..

You have left out a spacer washer which sits just below the hat/bearing. When you tighten the top of the strut , it tightens against both the top and bottom washers and keeps, the shock together. By leaving the washer out the spring with bounce and flex beyond its maximum travel - leaving this gap you see

washer? not on most coilovers iv seen.
just spring hat, bearing, bush, nut, then top hat or whatever its called as pictured.

            genuine parts for a mk4 I wonder?

Most if not all coilovers and suspension in general i have installed / taken apart have this - it may not literally be a washer but it is a washer/spacer with the same purpose of holding the piston relative to the springs travel.
I don't know the OP's car but I can see that from the issue , that he ( or whoever) has likely forgotten a part or process in the coilovers installation.

No parts were forgotten at all. Followed all instructions when installed and it wasn't my first time..

I suppose I could add a spacer between it to bring the hat up? (It would have to be pretty dam wide though so it sits on the helper spring no?) The top of the shock is only threaded so much and at this point it's at the limit of tightness on that particular nut.. If that all makes sense.

Mine sits that high, and I've replaced bearings and strut top mounts. As for squishing, sounds like blown shock?

I have lowered springs and my top section sits up like that as well.

Driveshafts rub on the front anti roll bar, drop links actually need to be shorter than standard to prevent this

Yeh. Had longer links but they were ass. Changed them ages ago.
Went back to stock and that's fine.

Hey jimmy. Thanks for the heads up. Noise is intermittent. So I'm thinking it could even be a stiff D bush on the swaybar. End links were replaced recently so I wouldn't think it was that.
Cheers. Is it possible it could be the ball joints? I do have replacements but haven't got around to doing them.

Sway bar bushes are notorious, and when gone will sound like sitting on an old bed, especially over speed humps. Ive went through the exercise of doing a thread on that some time ago with a view to haveing a fix for it, ive already done the fix whilst at Audi moons ago on a TT which has the same running gear really. Im waiting to see a Bora again which ill have time to have a play with it, just waiting for 4wd parts for it then itll be on. Ill give feedback when doen but might be some time till that happens.
                            Cheers
