Suspension noise

On a warm day, say 30+ I am getting knocking noises from the rear of the car. It seems to be related to shocks/springs.

If I get out of the car and push down on the rear I can hear the noise. On a cold day the noise is not there.

My mechanic can not determine with any degree of certainty what the noise might be, anyone have any ideas or had anything similar ?

Also on my front, if I hit a bump quite hard, also in high tempertures I get squeaking/groaning sound, probably the spring ?

hi i have experienced this on my mk4 golf which i recently purchassed 7 weeks ago, its squeaking sound on in the front, havnt taken much notice if it has been because of the heat. but it has been an ongoing thing in the last couple of weeks, but i have no clue wat it is.

It's the sound of your bushes (sway bar link in the front) going dry and possibly cracking from the heat. Give them a grease up and the noise should dissapear.

I've had this problem, just waiting all my bushes to come in..

I can tell you exeactly what that is -rear top strut mounts ( come as a complete housing with the bush) same happens to the Bora and the Beetle. While you are there pad up the rear seat strikers very bad for rattles. Man the mounts will make 100% difference.

Hi Didz,

Will give the grease a go. Hopefully I don't need new bushes just yet and if I have to replace them do the performance variety make a diference and where can I get some from ?

Jimmy, thanks for the info. I gave my mechanic part numbers out of elsawin, as VW had the noise marked down as a common problem. When he received the part he said the 'top mount' problem doesn't apply as it is a 4motion, same as an r32.

Does that make sense? I will post a diagram he sent me.

We got our part number from below and it turned out to be for FWD.

Cracking noises from the rear wheel arch

Cause

The complaint occurs, if the rear shock absorbers are not sufficiently decoupled by the upper damper mountings.

Production solution

No change.

Service solution

Various damper mountings are used in production. Establish with the vehicle data label and the parts system which damper mountings have been fitted. Vehicles with the PR numbers 1JC, 1JH, 1JG, UB3, UA9 have had an improved damper mounting with the index D since 12.1999 (Golf, Bora) or 06.2000 (Beetle).

Please contact Product Technical, if a damper mounting with the index D has been fitted. If it has a different index, proceed as follows:

Swap round the upper damper mountings. If the cracking noise moves to the other vehicle side, fit a new damper mounting with improved sound insulation - Part No.

1J0 513 353 D.


If the cracking moves to the other side after the swap, contact the importer.

Sorry didnt realise it was 4 motion otherwise i would have right away disregarded that mate!! Dry spring pads and like i say pad up those seat strikers , they are shocking for cracking giving the impression of suspension noise.
