I had a passat today V6 BBG 2.8 engine hot start issue funny enough but it did have a code - guess what Temp sensor.
Just a little thing you must check and spray around to look for any vac or air leaks as you may have some unmetered air upsetting the settings. Cold start not an issue as the system is in open loop with an enrichened engine but when in closed loop its very important and all it takes is a small leak and you will have worries as with the temp sensor the injectors are pulsed longer injecting more fuel and tends to flood.
Golf 4 did have an issue from memory with the ecu relay which is housed in the engine bay under a black cover near the bulkhead next to air box

Just to bring this thread up again....

Is it a water temp sensor? or a water temp switch? I'm trying to figure out what exactly the broken part may be called so i can order a new one!!! Else might give up and take the car to seb is he isn't too busy.

      Thanks.
