  • How often do you knock your subframe?

    It's pretty damn annoying.

I did it half an hour ago, on one of those small aggressive humps that plague our carparks

I wasn't going fast, probably 4 kph when I should've been going 2. These are the joys of lowering our cars.

I'm generally very aware of the road condition ahead, but sometimes things are unavoidable. I have a bit of an OCD with regards to how centered my steering wheel is, and I have a feeling that coming down on the speedbump as put it off by a few degrees. Is this even possible? and just how much abuse can the front subframe take?

If you have a photo of yours let's see what it looks like.

EDIT: Here's a photo of what happened to me last year, which was an insurance job and I had the get the subframe replaced. I was blinded by the sun (in a carpark - again!) and instead of stopping, I slowed down. Which clearly was the wrong thing to do.

    hit mine pretty much daily.
speedbumps, train lines, sinks/rises in the road.

Speed bump at school I hit sill on one then on the downwards drop off the last one I get subframe.
currently have road works outside the school park which means the road has been raised as we drive half over the footpath. iv been smoothing that down the last 2 weeks, since then the car has been lowered but I havnt had it at school.

There is a nice photo of my dogbone mount after dragging that at 80km/h on the princes hwy here in VIC.

That was a year or so ago...

Rarely hit my subframe. It's usually my sump, (sump sits a lot lower on the v6) lower control arm brackets, centre muffler or front lip.
I'm 23.6inch ground to front guard btw.

All the time! Not as bad as when I had my 180sx. I went into a very crappy car park and actually got stuck on a speed bump and wheels free spinning, had to get out and push down on rear to get traction...pretty embarrassing.

bashing subframe is siick, still makes me butt squeeze and I've been bashing it daily for about 8 months or so. Cracked oil pan as well. I'd love to notch the subframe, it will give you another inch or so. That would definately be the go along with TT spindles, motor mount spacers, you'd have an easily daily driveable "slammed" car.

Dylan I can't believe you havn't cracked your sump yet? Surely you'd hit it all the time?

                      2.0 sump doesn't sit as low as a 1.8t?

mine sits up higher then the subframe. dont know how that comapares to yours?
I know the US guys love the 2lt cos they go lower without engine lifts etc.

I do have a few marks on it from hitting really bad dips and rises, but normally the rest of the car takes all the force.

EDIT: just went and checked, its pretty much in with the subframe. Had it in my mind it sat higher

Hey mate, I'm not all that low, we'll not compared to some others. The above indecent took place because of an unfortunately placed kerb. lol.

I had a look and I'm guessing that it'd be bang on the 100mm rule. When I can find my tape measure I'll measure from ground to arch

EDIT: I found my tape measure, and get 63.5cm on each corner (18" wheels).

                            My carnage:

Before I raised the engine, the sump was the first to contact. Smacked it hard a couple of times, but once I hit it so hard it made a massive dent on the engine oil sensor. Lucky for me, cos if that wasn't there, I would have surely punched a hole through the sump. Now, I either hit the section around the dog-bone mount, or the control arm mounting points.
