  • Power Steering Pump

    Hi all,

I can hear it... The slight whine when I'm turning and I just know it's my power steering pump. My question is though, are the pumps uniform though-out the MK4 range? I have a 1.6L and I am wondering if a more common 1.8T pump would fit..?

I couldn't find any information on other threads, so if there is please direct me.

    Thanks all!

Don't go replacing the pump. Just top up the fluid. The pump gets really noisy when there is not enough fluid.
Mine has been leaking for about 5 years or so and only needed a top up once.
You have to get the correct fluid from the dealer. It cost about $22 for a litre. Supercheap, Repco etc will not have the correct fluid.

Yea mine was doing the same, checked the fluid and it was massively low. Dont go putting any old fluid in though. Do your research first.

        Cheers guys!

My priority is my brakes though. I think I just busted the piston in the caliper!

Well... I don't have the tool to twist the piston back and reset it for the new pads so I tried to use a g-clamp to get pressure and twist it at the same time.. I know that it was probably a stupid idea in hindsight, seemed genius when I did it...

Now there is a fluid leak from the boot and my brake pedal does flat to the floor (I re-installed the old pads) and have to pump it a couple of times to get pressure through the system to actually brake...

Piston broke! Bit late now, but you can use the tool from an angle grinder to wind the calipers back.

Funny you brought that up because that's what I used after the G-clamp, found it in the shed and it fit perfectly! But yeah - a bit late now...

Dang that sucks about the brakes.
I use a G Glamp for pressure and a modified piston cube to wind it back.

I'll look at the angle grinder tool next time, in about 4 years.

                      All is good!

Bled the brakes and whammo, good as new!

I never knew that air in the lines could be that scary..!!

Good to hear it is sorted.
So both problems are probably just air in the line. Get some VW powersteering fluid and you should be sorted.
