  • Where is the check engine light on the Dash?

    Hey All,

Went to look at a MK4 the other day but couldnt for the life of me work out which light is the check engine light. Can anyone tell me if its lit up in this picture or where I should have been looking?

    Cheers

Turn the key off, then back on again. It'll appear for a few seconds before going out.

        from the left;
airbag, immobiliser, temp, brake pad wear indicator, fuel, oil level, screen washer level, ABS, Handbrake on, battery, drivers seat belt not on.

check engine light is not one of those lit in your pic

Engine warning light looks like an engine shaped icon with an exclamation mark, and is red. Cant remember which dial it shows up in, think it is the centre...

I wouldn't be in any mad rush to want to see this one.

I took it for a test drive and it felt fine. I could have been to slow on the photo and missed it. When I was looking at the manual it seemed to indicate that that icon was something to do with the exhaust system :|

you may find that any errant fault, even temporary, that is from any one of a range of sensors attached to the engine, may cause the light to come on...

My concern is more that the engine light isnt there and the light has been removed to hide the fact there is a engine error.

Sorry, it is a running joke on The Big Bang Theory where Penny has a Golf and the Check Engine light is almost permanently lit and she says she really must stick something over it.

Look like your small bulb is gone:

That may depend on the ECU programming.

For example: All Euro and US spec MkIV R32's have the light come on when you first start the car as a check.

And yet on all the Australian ones the light does NOT come on at all when you first start car.

The Australian cars have a different ECU program in them.

Our cars are only EU2 spec emissions, but the Euro ones were EU4 spec.

Kind of ironic we got a "dirtier" engine.

The light is an LED, so it would be extremely unlikely to be faulty.

Someone may have put some tape under the symbol to hide a light though - you would have to dismantle the cluster face to check that though.

If you can post up the engine code then someone else on here with the same engine ECU could confirm whether it does actually light up on ignition in their car.

PM if you are looking for: R32 rear sway bar; R32 suspension springs; Euro Headlight switches

I have a 99.5 GTI and i have never seen the check engine light. I've read the owners manual, and it doesnt say anything about a CEL in it. I can only assume that perhaps this year model does not have one. Even doing a full instrument check test with VAG VCDS did not make one light up.
                            Cheers

Same with my R32 - does not show up in the instrument test either.
