Hi guys how hard is it to change the stereo head unit for a Bora? Do you need to modify the wiring a bit to make it fit? I haven't done any in the past cars so not too sure of where to start. I know how the head unit comes out.
Any help would be great.
have not done mine yet .. still saving up for a boss unit lol .. should be plenty of input here .. usually you will need a facia kit and a wiring harness to stop u from cutting wires . .

Ic I went on the web to get some advise and yea they said about the facia kit and the wiring harness.
I guess the hard way is to cut the wires and join them up. Hey do you know (except ebay) where I can get the single cd dins?
do you know if vw sell them?
I've carried habits over from when I was a lot younger installing head units in Nissans.. Just cut the wires and then bridge them. Ghetto and fun. It's pretty easy to do in the Bora.
Ic. JB's having a 30% off cd head units until this sunday guys so if anyone's interested should go and check them out man.
It's so cheap these days. I remember buying a head unit back in the early 2000 for $800 and that wasn't even in the top range but now you can get a decent one for about $200-$300. Awsome!!!
I just installed mine yesterday. Bought a bunch of stuff from Autobarn but the salesmen ended up selling me all the wrong stuff. Turns out there's kind of a wiring harness in the car anyway and my mate and I just cut the wires and recrimped them. It's not hard, just take your time and use this site to help:
Like all VWs, the Bora has a standard audio harness (even the pre 2002 models with the Australia only Eurovox headunit) so just get an adapter for the headunit you buy and plug right in. 10x easier than the ghetto job and 100% reversible.
If you want a better OEM system than came with the car look at eBay in UK or Germany, plenty of cool stuff like the factory MFD satnav unit (I love mine, I have added bluetooth and ipod connectivity to it and I am considering adding the auto switching reversing camera setup too)
What this man said, Don't cut the wires on the car side. Get an ISO adapter for your head unit and cut those wires if you have to. Makes it such a cleaner install.

I would change my aftermarket headunit for one of those VW satnav units any day. For mine though I just bought a connector labelled 'European to Sony adaptor' or maybe even just 'Sony adaptor' from Repco, I needed this as well though: VW Bora Double Din Stereo Surround Fitting Kit | eBay

You should check out spares at VW there's a new head unit out that will fit straight into all mk4 vehicles. It has Bluetooth built in, USB, SD slot worth looking at as a factory upgrade. These unit are an extra for the new UP's. sorry forgot the unit code.
The guy at Autobarn told me I needed a European ISO wiring harness with a female plug, but what I actually needed for my Golf MK4 was a male plug so keep that in mind.
Depending on the head unit you go for, you might also need a car antenna adaptor. I installed a Pioneer unit, and I used this to connect my antenna:
yea remy you are right. I got the euro to alpine (16pin) adapter over the weekend and as you said you also need the adapter for the antenna also. Its so easy to do, no worries at all. Thanks guys for all the infos!!!
