Hi all,

There is already wiring to the back as the amps and subs are in the boot. I plan on pulling the subs out because they prevent access to the spare (previous owner didnt think it through very much) and using spare channels on the amps for a pair of
6x9's in the parcel shelf. I was just wondering if any of you have tried this in a 4mo bora and if so were there any difficulties and is it worth doing?

havnt done it personally but cant see why it would be a problem. as long as the amp is suited for hte task, and you change it at the headunit from a 'sub' to pickup the normal channels (maybe same as rear door speakers?)

rear shelf doesnt have cutouts like commodores etc, so have you worked out a way of placing the speakers?

6x9's are terrible for SQ. very hard to find quality drivers in a 6x9 applicatio. if youre not overly cocerned about quality thats your call. spend your money on some quality sound stage up front and either re-mount your sub or just do without.

Also keep in mind that if you touch the parcel shelf, its considered a part of the vehicles structural integrity and as such your call will no longer be RWC. Very rare to be pulled up on it, but it does happen in isolated cases.

Hi Josh - I put the subs on the Parcel Shelf and used the oem speakers - sounds great. I installed them before thinking about the parcel shelf legalities - I did think carefully about where I cut - and only did a minimum of removal - and kept all the anchor points...
I am very please with the results and hope there will be no problems...

I'd recommend a set of 3-ways of a decent brand .. like Vibe , Hertz or Pioneer .. it should do the job well .. dont turn up the bass ridiculously because you will lose quality ..

Fairly sure they are 6.5 inch. Honestly they are some of the best stock speakers I have ever heard and you probably have to pay some pretty decent money to upgrade them. I would only bother if mine were actually broken.

A sub is always nice though

i agree. the mk4 speakers are excellent OEM speakers. id only be replacing them with POLKs or similar.

This being the third car I've owned and upgraded audio, and having done 8 full car audio upgrades for friends (H/U, amps, sub, wiring, speakers, sound dampening etc etc), I have to say that the OEM mk4 golf speakers are incredibly good for stock. Last car I ended up with around 5k worth of audio equipment in it and still my mid bass response was worse than stock golf speakers. Tweeters do miss a substantial amount of range, but for the power requirements that they only need they perform great.
If you want more punch, it's not unheard of for people to amp the OEM speakers and getting great results, although I'd say upgrade your tweeters.

If you do want to upgrade speakers, keep in mind it's not just unplug old speakers, chuck in a new set, most aftermarket speakers are power hungry, and you'll need to amp them otherwise they will be substantially worse than stock speakers. So to IMPROVE oem audio, you'll probably be looking at minimum $500 front splits, minimum $500 amp, then minimum $100 cabling, then you'll probably get more vibration and will need to get sound deadening.

As they say, don't fix it unless it's broke, and I think this is very true for the mk4 oem speakers.

im runing Amped OEM Speakers . . gotta say .. enough bass with awesome sound quality that impresses people when they hear it for the first time ..

Thanks for all the info guys, I think ill mount them on the parcel shelf rather than in it, so probably in a little box each and just drill a small hole through the shelf for the wiring. That also solves my other problem of where to mount the amps (they are currently on top of the sub box pressed against the underside of the parcel shelf).
Can anyone suggest a reasonably good h/u for $300-400? My current one is a pig to use. Since i dont know much about tuning the bass/treble etc i just want one that does the job, preferabl with AUX input and with preset EQ.

Visit sonicelectronix.com, that's were I've picked up a lot of my audio equipment. If you keep your eye out you can get a bargain, I got MB Quart 6 splits for the front that regular retail for ~$1000 and got them for $220 a set, as they were from the last years batch and there were minor visual adjustments.
H/U's are so F#*n cheap it's not funny compared to australia.
