  • Clunk noise when braking

Hey guys I notice yesterday that I have a clunk noise coming from somewhere when I brake at low speeds or when I use the clutch unsmoothly and it transfers weight onward of the car :S
    Anyone had this problem before?
Any advice as to what it is and how to fix it?

    Cheers,
    Jed

Without knowing where the sound is coming from makes it difficult to diagnose.
Can you tell if it is from the front or rear, left or right or both sides?

Any different when turning or going straight?

Control arm bush or dogbone mount. These take forward and back force. Dogbone for the engine/transmission, control arm for the chassis.
Is more likely to be the control arm bush though, they are prone to failure. I'm on my 3rd set.

Had a similar noise which turned out to be loose brake calipers, Worth having a look won't take much effort. Sure its not the haldex kicking in?

Didn't you just change to V3's? Did you change the strut mounts as well?

Well I have new rear upper control arms with lower ones to be fitted next week and the front control arm bushes were changed to polyurethane ones when I got the V3's done on Thursday. It sounds like its coming from the centre of the car under the dashboard?
And yes strut mounts were changed.
Doesn't seem to be different when turning though it is only happening when braking and clutch use at low speed. Unless I'm just not noticing it at higher speed?

centre under the dash would maybe point to dog bone mount?

On the Golf at least, it is just left of centre

                  Jed,

You mentioned it sounds like a clunk, could you possible describe it as a knocking type noise? is it speed related? Like when you slow down it slows down in accordance with vehicle speed? To me it sounds like excessive free play in a mount or bushing but would like a little more info.

                  Cheers,

                  James

Definitely not speed related, it's not repetitive just a single knock/clunk noise. Shame if it is my dog mount a I put an ecs order in last night! an its already shipped out :'(

Hmm, I hate trying to chase noises/knocks/vibrations etc, i really need to hear/feel it myself as i m sure with the other guys here. Worst comes to worst see if you can borrow a set of chassis ears, they can make tracking noises and problems alot easier. I hate to say it but shy of that you will really need to cover your critical components in depth, think about what conditions change and what forces are acting on the car when it happens. I.e if it happens just when braking, it is occuring when the nose is down, inspect the components as necessary.

Yeah well it seems to just coincide with clutch and brake use and seems to be getting slightly worse. Would I be able to see if the dogbone mount was broken or something somehow?

                        Cheers,

I have dog bone bushes in for $35, if you want one.

Chassis ears one of the best tools in my kit to be honest beats the screwdriver!! Anyway, dogbone good place to start at $35 cant go wrong. There is a few things that can clunk in there, can you get it to do it if you roll forward, brake then reverse?? that really moves everything around when you do that. What makes it hard is the fact that noise transmits very well. Thats where the chassis ear is valueable , well after an hr of chasing anyway.

Hey Gavin. I'd love one! Are they just the stock ones? How hard are they to fit?
And how much are chassis ears??
The chassis ears sound like a very good investment! Hsha oh, and what exactly are they? XD
