Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Has it ever been done?

So I was searching the net lastnight and came across an ad for an mk4 r32 for wrecking and I got an idea! what if I bought the whole car and used my mk4 5 door as a shell? would all the mounting points for the suspension, differentials and exhaust be the same between the two? Is it possible to make mine a r32 5 door project car?

Not sure if the suspension mounts are the same, would seem logical for them to be. But you would need to cut the rear floorpan out of the R32 and transplant it as the diff and haldex won't fit under a regular golf floor.

I have seen threads on VW Vortex that talk about doing it but I never followed the threads far enough to see if they actually achieved it

front end might 'bolt up' ok.
but I think some serious chopping would have to be done to get the 4mo system in the back...

You just need to weld the rear floor pan into the shell which then gives you all the suspension, rear subframe mounting points.

        Like this:

VWVortex.com - Heres my AWD swap in my MK4

The front end should a bolt in job, except the V6 shell has a couple of extra little supports up near the top of the strut towers I believe.
PM if you are looking for: R32 rear sway bar; R32 suspension springs; Euro Headlight switches

Sure, it can be done but is it worth it. Personally I'd save for an R32 but that's just me!

I have re thought my post.

What I should have said was that I'd be the first to praise you if you do do it!
You won't see your money back but you will have a kick arse V6 4mo golf that has 5 doors!!!

                    I wish I had 4mo in mine.

conversions are cool, but it would be cheaper to buy an R32....

however, bring on the fun and do it!
