Mk 4 bora scraping noise.

Hi guys,

My bora makes a horrible scraping noise when turning. heres what i managed to figure out so far...

- The noise happens when turning reasonably tight such as out of driveways, small roundabouts etc etc.
- The sound SEEMS to come from the front and back of the car at the same time.
- Only heard at very low speed <15km/h
- As far as i can tell it isnt coming from the exhaust.
- It also isnt tires catching on any guards or plastic.

Just a quick list of what the car has.
- New control arms on front with new bushes.
- New tie rods and ends.
- New cv joints (inner and outer) on front end along with driveshafts.
- aftermarket exhaust.

I am at a loss as to what it could be. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it a 4mo bora? Aftermarket suspension or wheels? A scraping noise is a bit weird if its not rubbing on plastic or cv's going. Any chance you could record the noise. Its perplexing me at the moment.

Unlikely - the dogbone connects the engine/gearbox to the chassis, and turning wouldn't have an effect. Worn/broken dogbone is generally apparent if you rev the engine with the bonnet raised and there's a LOT of movement (the engine will rock forward/back in the engine bay).

For what it's worth, I seem to have something similar at present...

wheel bearings can do this as they get worn.

Sound might be coming from front or back, with the noise transmitted through the body, sounding like it's coming from both...

Yeah its the v6 4mo but as far as i know standard on suspension and wheels. ill have a go at recording it and posting to youtube tomorrow.
Wouldnt wheel bearings also make noise at higher speed though?
Ill post a recording as soon as possible and see what you guys reckon.

Wheels bearings should be constant I woulda thought.

Uh-oh hope it's not your Haldex or rear diff screwing up. Is the car jerky at all at low speeds?

Yeah i thought wheel bearing should be constant but i wasnt sure. Occasionally it can be jerky when starting to move, as if your bunny hopping with the clutch but that could (hopefully) just be me being a bad driver temporarily

Power steering belt loose Old Falcons were famous for that when on hard lock.

It has a new belt and tensioner. Sorry, i forgot to list that in the original post.

Well if it's jerky at slow speeds it sorta sounds like what I had. I doubt you're that bad a driver to only bunny hope when turning tight (unless you bunny hope all the time)! When I had my problem I heard a scraping sound but it was actually a wheel skidding when the rear diff locked up.

By any chance does your ESP light flash while turning tight? Does it happen when turning left or right or both?

Have a read through this thread and hopefully it won't be you but it is a pretty common problem on the 4mo.

It's just weird as it has new control arms, bushes, tie rods ends and CV joints and stock setup to have a scraping sound unless the aftermarket exhaust was a dodgy install and something is hanging loose?

That doesnt sound like it because ive had a mate hanging out the side of the car whilst I move around on the driveway and all the wheels are turning smoothly. The ESP doesnt kick in either. Thanks heaps for the suggestions but they dont sound right.
Is there any way I can stop the car putting power to the rears without actually disconnecting the driveshaft?

i heard of a famous front wheel skidd enabling Fuse that you can disconnect .. not entirely sure which one it is .. surely someone has tried it ..

Just take out the Haldex fuse for FWD fun.

cheers guys, ive heard haldex fuse is #31, does that sound right to you guys? It definitely beats disconneting the rear driveshaft
