looking at getting a short throw kit, i'm hearing good things about the HPA. Anyone have any other advice? I'm also looking at getting a complimenting shorter shifter?

    cheers

I've heard the best option by far is to get the OEM Audi TT kit.

Same engine, same gearbox, shorter throw etc - I've heard the linkages are fairly very susceptable to breaking so i'd much rather use an OEM kit I know won't break anything!

If you find a place that sells them at a resonable price let me know! Maybe we can get a few guys together and split shipping?

OEM sounds pricey but i'll have a look into it, cheers. The HPA kit is about $150 and is at the box end. These are the reviews I was eluding to:

Then their is the shifter side of things, i trust the B&M name but they aren't here and will need to be shipped so prob around the $400 mark for this:

anyone have any other shifter options?

          cheers dboo

was it good? had you tried any others?

the word from the other forum i put in there is they are pretty similar, aside from the variable adjustment, and the HPA is cheaper.

any HPA users got a couple of cents?

I've had the HPA one in my R for ages, very happy with it and I'm using it on the shortest throw. Speak to Dragan at Inmotive http://www.inmotive.com.au/ he sourced mine for me.

            Cheers Al

thanks al, dragan is checking out what stock he's got.

what shifter are you using? not sure how the R is, no doubt shorter than the GTi anyway.

was there an impact on the lateral movement as well as the throw?

The R is shorter stock throw than the GTI stock throw not sure about height as it's been that long since I had my GTI.

I'm using the HPA short shift for 02M in 35% reduction mode with the stock R shifter, though I am looking at getting this from USRT http://www.usrallyteam.com/mss.html But I don't think it would be suitable for someone with a daily driver as it puts the shifter right up high near your left hand.

No impact on lateral movement but the 35% reduction in throw is brilliant.

I notice the one for the 02J box which I think is for the 5 speed GTI is up to 40%

I still have my stock R one here but I don't think it will fit on your car.

                Cheers Al

i'm going to go with the HPA

dragan has one for my box (it is the 40%) i just have to check whether the cable linkage pin is 8 or 10mm.

That shifter mech you sent looks a pretty serious piece of equipment, i take it you're in motorsport. as you say not for me.

i'll ask dragan if he knows whether I can get the R stock onto mine if you're interested in selling.

                  cheers for the assistance

Not sure if it will fit your car as I'm pretty sure it is for a six speed box but check with Dragan, the HPA is shorter than it anyway so I'd stick with that regardless.

I only really use the R now for tarmac rallies, rarely drive it on the street anymore though it is still registered, just trying to decide how much further to go with it. Pictures here if your interested

now i think i'm getting confused with the terminology: i'm keen to use the HPA short shift kit (for the box end of things) al la:

i'm just looking to get a new actual shifting rod or stock or whatever you call it, as per:

i thought the R 'shifting rod' might have been shorter than the standard GTi but your still using yours from the looks of things anyway, speaking of:

the R is nice! i'm guessing you would have had to get some engineering done to keep that on the road. dutton rally would have been cool too, saw some of it on tv. I remember a polo, if i recall correctly, which kenny was driving and i'm pretty sure i would have seen the R too. would have been a good experience and exposure i'm thinking.

                        Hey Fuzz,

Yes the HPA one at the gearbox end is what I am using with the stock R shifter rod. As I said I'm not sure if the stock R shifter rod is shorter than the GTI one or not, it's been ages since I had my GTI. If I change to the motorsport shifter from USRT then I will remove the HPA at the gearbox end and go back to the stock R one as the USRT shifter not only lengthens the shifting rod to get it closer to your hand on the steering wheel it also shortens the throw by 65%.

The rollcage is CAMS ROPS compliant and the car is CAMS log booked to the M2C2 modern tarmac rules.

I've done a few Dutton's in it including the one with Kenny when he was in the Polo with Dave Pitman but I'm doing events like Mt Buller, Rally Tas, Targa and the like in it now. For me there's too much motorkhana stuff in the Duttons and I prefer proper pace noted events though the Dutton series is a really good time it's not a true tarmac rally and I hate the motorkhana part of them.

                        Cheers Al

This TT OEM short shift kit from ECS Tuning looks pretty good value. Aussie dollar pretty good at the moment too.

it is good value but now i got my sights on the other one even though it's triple the price and only double the throw reduction...

i'm also trying hard not to buy one of those B&M shifters which i reckon look pretty nice and I guess would work good too
