  • GTI Water Pump

    Hi all,
bought my 02 GTI 2 years ago and love it.Water pump was done in 08 (40K since)
To clarify, is it the 5 year mark to replace the pump or is it km,s travelled.
Also anyone pushed the point and not bothered to replace after 5 years?
Will it really go bang if I leave it another year or two.
    Cheers

Just replace it when you do the timing belt, so every 4 years or 90K.

Also replace it with the steel impeller not the plastic one. My original plastic impeller pump lasted about 40k. I had a metal impeller pump installed and still going great. Funny thing is both plastic and metal impeller pumps are made in the same factory. Why VW didn't install metal from the start is beyond me.

Metal ones lock up and get stuck so rubs on the belt. plastic ones lock up crack and allow the belt to keep spinning.
I think thats what the madness behind the theory was.
