  • MKIV GTI: Smoke coming out of the interior vents

    Hi All,

There is white smoke coming out of my interior air vents of the MKIV GTI.

It seems to only be happening when the air is off and seems to be tempermental.

I believe it is the heater core but dont want to assume the worst.

Anyone else had this issue and might know how to help?

If it is coolant from a busted heater core. The steam/smoke/mist will smell sweet and your windows will mist up sharpish if it's chilly out.

You need to confirm if it is smoke or steam. As Gavin said coolant will smell sweet.
Try to catch some of the 'smoke' in a glass and see if it condenses or not.

ah that sweet, sweet coolant smell. i remember when i dumped my coolant all over the driveway and the neighbour's dog came and licked it up.

there isn't much else it can be apart from shorted wiring or motor, which will smell acrid.
