Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • V5 Engine Mounts

Hi, I've got a 2001 V5 manual that has had shuddering on take-off (first and reverse) as well as bone-jarring thumping through the car when I hit bumps and pot holes. I was initially told that the clutch and suspension were both rooted causing the 2 separate issues. Was then told by another mechanic that there was nothing wrong with the clutch, it's a dual mass flywheel and "can't be ruined at 150,000km" and, by accelerating harder during take-off (WTF??) I could smooth out the rough take-off (doesn't work and is just a stupid suggestion). I haven't done anything because replacing a $2000 clutch on a maybe is not my idea of money well spent.

Now I've been told by a VW specialist mechanic (not a dealer) that both issues are being caused by buggered engine mounts and that to replace "the main one" will cost me $700 and then "if we take it apart and find the other 2 are buggered as well then we'll have to price them as required". Can someone tell me how hard the engine mounts are to replace myself (I have mechanical knowledge, but not much experience with VW's) or am I better paying this bloke to do it for me? I've searched "engine mount" in the forum but came up with pages of something called a "dog bone" which I can only assume is one of the mounts. One post suggested this is a 15 minute replacement, so I doubt this is the one the mechanic is talking about (or he saw me coming and decided to fund his next holiday). Any info much appreciated. (sorry about the essay, had to explain where I'm at!!) Woo.

We have both main mounts in stock, we dont keep dogbone mounts in stock just the stiffer bushings.

We can also source a single mass flywheel conversion for your car including clutch for $550

That's great, I'd be interested in a price on the main mounts, thanks. Would also appreciate if anyone can tell me how hard they are to fit or if there is a how-to on here that I've missed.

As for the clutch, this has been mentioned on the forum before and while it's heaps cheaper than the dual mass, I spoke to 2 clutch specialists and 2 VW specialists that said they hadn't fitted a conversion before and didn't know what was involved. I think I'd be out of my depth with that sort of work. I wouldn't mind trying the mounts first and seeing if that fixes the problem. Thanks again for the info.

The dog bone mount is a piss of piss, Literally unbolt and re-bolt to change over. You will need new bolts on it as the stock bolts are stretch bolts and should be changed every time. I'd say it would be more like one of the other mounts. If they are gone good chance its metal on metal. Main cost with the replacement will be the labour as its engine out or close too. Should be able to do a semi decent inspection of each, On both ends.

Dogbone mount. (Should be able to inspect yourself)

I wouldn't really see how its a clutch issue. Clutches usually slip when going and dual masses usually turn to single masses when they go (and they do wouldn't see 150,000km as being that far off but could tell you in a couple of weeks.) Nothing different with the conversion from what i can tell as the dual is just one unit. Only issue is you might get a bit of chattering when changing to a single but does differ from car to car.

Hey, thanks for the info. The dog bone seems easy so I will check it out in the daylight tomorrow. The other mounts now seem worthwhile paying the mechanic to change them if it means almost total removal of the engine. Not really up for that kinda work. Might get another quote just to be sure Im not being ripped-off. Any recommendations for a decent VW mechanic in Moorabbin (Melbourne) area?

Mmm He might be right. Probably ok to just support the engine undo the bolts and change. Probably should have looked a bit more into it :S

Have a look at this thread. Might change your mind and make you want to do it yourself.

Thanks for that. I had a look at the link and then contacted the guy who posted it, he was really helpful and sent me a bit of info on doing it. I just need to order the 2 mounts, then I'll give it ago and take pics for others doing the same thing. Thanks again to everyone!!
