  • knocking noise from front passenger wheel.

    hi all,
just lately iv been hearing a knocking noise from the front passenger side of the car.
at first it seemed to be when i turned right at speeds between 5 and ~30km/h
but in the last week or so it seems to be also when accelerating between 5 and ~50km/h (nothing when coasting or braking from what i can tell...)
the noise changes with speed (faster i go, the quicker the knocking).

it honestly reminds me of when i had stock wheels were on and the bolts started to come lose...
have tried turning on full lock (was told this is the way to test CV joints) and heard nothing.
I have trouble replicating the sound at the best of times (when people are in the car to listen).

Going to pull the wheel off and investigate on Wednesday but would like some more ideas on what to look for?
am currently running adapters but they are 100% hub and wheel centric, correct bolt seats, and i checked the bolts but they seemed to be done up fine.
might throw a stock/different wheel on also and see what happens.

    Cheers, Dylan

I know it probably wont help but when I put my coilovers up one weekend because I was going for a long drive I got the knocking a lot at similar times to you, once I lowered them again I was fine and dandy. So maybe its your car telling you to lower it?

Could be the inner guard has popped out behind the wheel (engine bay side) and flapping against the tyre? Has happened to me a few times, I can pop it back in now just on full lock, except I've lost one of the square bolts now ...

I've got the same problem. Don't know what it is, possibly the sway bar. Still need to investigate further.
Is it more of a bang or clicking?

                Probably a good idea.
But they failed to find what the twang noise was in my left front when reversing on full lock, it still there after a full suspension refresh too.

most of my arch and engine liners are gone... did think about this but then surely i would hear it on full lock

any other way to test other then the full lock method?

well bushes have been gone for a long time, and have had R32 top struts in for about 40,000km... so couldnt imagine they would have got worse and strut tops should still be ok for a little longer...

I dont have a sway bar so one less thing to investigate.
                  more low pitch thumping/clunking

thoughts about the pedders check, but im also due for a service so might get them too suss it out at the same time.

can anyone suggest any other 'tests' for the CVs?
is there a noise for when tie rods are on the way out, or do they just get sloppy?
iv done two CV boots on my drivers side and continually bash the frame on the drivers, so thought it would have been there that went first... not my passenger...

all be it a different model, my golf made the exact same noises (noisiest under acceleration and up hills as well as with a passenger), changed both cv's no more noise. not sure of any checks you can do

just dropped into volkspower, they seem to think its the control arm bush gone.
But they are going to check it out next wednesday either way

Sounds like a wheel bearing, I had mine go on the way home from the JDMST meet.

Yep agreed, i had a 4mo Bora last week would make a crack/clunk noise full lock low speed, up driveways etc, was the wheel bearing all good, this car already had all the above thrown at it in a shop before hand. Seen a couple do this now

                          cheers

I only get it under acceleration and when doing a right hand turn. I tried the full lock at the end of the court and couldnt hear it, doesnt seem to do it in reverse either... still thinking bearing?

Hmm this one i had of late was at low speeds but was on right hand turn, would go clunk/crack sound and i could feel it come through the strut, i had my chassis ear hooked up to it and you would swear it was coming from the strut top according to my chassis ear thats where it was, but that was already done, so changed the wheel bearing as i had seen it in the past and that fixed it, accelerating still could be but could also be what the other fella said, CV. Does it do it at low speed too or only accel?? chassis ear is the bomb if you have someone close to you with one

Cheers and good luck with that
