MKIV at Home Service Question

Hi there,

I recently purchased a "$49" car service coupon from Cudo to service my car (VW Golf 2001 Mkiv 2l engine, 8v).
The deal seemend good, all free except fluids and parts. I called to get an estimate on "fluids and parts" and they said $500!! What a Scam!

So i thought i would change fluids and parts myself and get them to do the service free.

For 83.90*GBP = 131.292*AUD delivered from http://www.vwspares.co.uk
I get :

My question is:

Can a complete newbie install these parts himself with the aid of youtube and a service book for mkiv (which i am downloading now)

and

What tools do i need to buy (be as precise in names as possible please)

Fluids and parts = The Service
Those 'service' vouchers have been around for ages and are always a rip off. I think Midas used to do them in Brisbane in the 90s. They use them to get you in the door and tell you all the things that need to be 'fixed' on your car and how they can't legally let you drive the car until you get them fixed.

There are plenty of other things that you might want a VW specialist to look at for you too. Are their any oil leaks ? What condition are the spark plugs ? Have any fault codes been logged ?
A trained eye will spot problems and save you in the long run.

I generally fix things that break on my car and get my mechanic to do the service and inspection once a year.

The spark plugs and oil filter were changed at the last service.
I may get a service from a VW dealer however, in the interest of saving money, can i fit the parts listed myself (oil/ fuel/cabin filter?) without too much fuss?

If you buy all the fluids and parts yourself can't you just dump it on their counter with the voucher and say, "$49 service biatch!"?

Or is it in the T&Cs that you have to buy stuff off them?

Btw it can all be done by a newbie as long as you have the tools.

It's in the T&C's taht you need to buy parts and oils off them. I think i will call and discuss precisiely what fluids i want, and make sure they source the parts at a reasonable price beforehand.

HOWever, Do you believe i am able to change these parts on my own and what tools are required (never done car stuff before but can build a pc!)

Mate I'm a Network Engineer and I do these things myself so you should have no problems.

I've got a V6 Bora so don't know the exact tools you need but there should be heaps of guides online.

Well it is all nuts bolts and clips like a PC

You will need torx driver to remove under engine trays to access oil filter.
Cabin and engine air filters just need a screwdriver.
You need a big spanner or socket for the oil drain plug - not sure on the size 17 - 19mm ?
Filter wrench for the oil filter.
Ramps or axle/jack stands.
