  • Bora 'coughing' when I start it

It's happened a few times, seems to happen when it's a cold morning and i first start her up. She revvs a little funny (like really low, feels like there's a loss of power), and if I try to give her some gas, she 'coughs' or splutters, making like a 'puff puff' noise, definitely doesn't feel right.

    Could it be:

    1) an air wall leak (mechanic said I might have to get this checked out); or

    2) air mass meter; or

    3) something else ?

    cheers

Could be an ignition coil on the way out. Best to the the ECU error codes scanned by a VW specialist.

the 2.0l doesnt have misfire detection, only later V5s and VR6s do.

Good thing he has the vr6?

Might be a vacuum leak, they cause the engine to run pretty horribly but as above i would get it scanned first.

If you're going to keep the car a while and want to DIY it's best to invest in your own VCDS cable.

Is this just on startup when it's cold? Intermittent? So once it's warmed up it doesn't happen anymore?

at the moment, I'd say so, but I'll need to keep monitoring it to be sure.

does that mean that if my car misfires, a warning will come up in the dash ?

2001 V6 wont have it either , it wasnt until the multiple coilpack models came in before it came standard .

ok, they fixed the air wall leak but it still does it; in fact it took me 3-4 goes to start the car the other day (battery is brand new, so that isn't the issue)...

gonna ask them to check for error codes, also check the MAF and possibly ignition coils..... i'm freaking out a little here tho

Mines a 2001 with coil pack and it still has misfire detection.

Still thinking error codes are your best bet.

error codes didn't bring up misfire (but it could be because it doesn't have detection maybe?)

watching more misfire youtube vids makes me think it could be the case.

anyway, garage is monitoring it for a few days to see if it happens again.
