Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • fitting tow bar to Bora 4mo

Has anyone done it ? If so, how much?

I saw this place on Victoria Rd does it for $575
    VW Bora Tow Bar Sydney

but do I need to get the wiring or 'canbus' set up on top of that?

Really have no idea when it comes to tow bars, so appreciate all the help I can get.

Also, anyone know of good places to find new (cheap) or used trailers? Just a 6 by 9 or something big enough to fit gardening tools into ?

    cheers

That's a good price. I paid about $ 500 for a Hayman Reese bar that I installed myself.

Wiring is conventional. No special black boxes required.

CANBUS is only an issue in Australian released VWs* from the Mk5 generation onward. MK4 and earlier have a standard wiring setup.

      * I say this because I've heard rumours of some CANBUS equipped Mk4s overseas - the DSG Mk4 R32 for instance.
      Nothing to see here...

so if they say 'fitted', that means the wiring is already done ? Sweet

I made a plug in loom myself. Can't vouch for how others would do it.

A small section of the bumper has to be cut out. It's on the underside of the skirt. Not noticable unless you crawl under the car to look at it.

Mounting is very discrete with the tongue removed.

I didn't mount the trailer plug to the car, I used one of the flexible, flat ribbon types that rolls up into the boot.
