  • lowering mk4

hey guys im looking for the cheapest option to lower my golf mk4 2.0, im a student so i would like the best option on a budget. cheers guys

How low do you want to go?

If your existing dampers (shocks) are in decent condition and you don't want to drop the car too far, lower springs will only cost a few hundred dollars (get decent ones though).

For more serious drops, you'd want to change dampers too, as going too low on a standard damper will cause you problems as you hit the bump stops. Alternatively, look at a set of coilovers - I know ECS are doing FK coilovers for the Mk4 for less than USD$600 before shipping (let me know if you want a quote on them with shipping).

I'm still convinced that a drop beyond R32 height demands twin sets of adjustable lower control arms to control camber and toe concerns - unless you love buying rubber every 10k kms.

You can probably go a little lower than stock R32 height, but not much, before camber/toe becomes an issue, but not much. When I was on the coilovers I was significantly lower, but toe was well within acceptable limits.

Don't forget to add fitting and wheel alignment to the cost.
Coilovers will be the cheapest option, you can go as low as your spine or driveway allows.
Give Matt at Camden GTi a call he has a set.
I'll be going the shocks/coils/swaybar route, far more expensive but I think it will give me a more comfy ride while making the car a sweet handler.

springs and shocks are a cheap option and will give a slightly better ride than fk streetlines

I used to have the fk streetlines, the ride handling was a huge improvement over stock and if you are on a budget I would recommend them

You would be looking at around $400 for installation

Will be diying so cost isn't a factor for me for install but 400 seams high shouldn't take no more than 2 hours if they know what there doing. Then a wheel allignment. 300 seams about right.

You can get Koni strt. H&r sport springs plus ecs stage 2 refresh kit for 1000 shipped. I think that's pretty good.

I dont think antonn's budget will stretch that far ( only speculating) but agree that ECS have a good range.
DIY will always save you dollars.

@ antonn: cheapest way is a set of coil springs and DIY

I have lowered springs on stock dampers on my Mk4, the ride is pretty bone-shaking at times, and it scrapes a lot. The sump is scarily close to the road too.

I looked into getting KW V1 coilovers from Awesome GTI in the UK and it worked out around $950 landed (130 GBP postage), that's the way I'll go eventually.

Dpm performance in the uk also sells kw v1 - I got for $850 landed (basic, not stainless steel version) and I love them.
Only took 8 days to get here too.

what model mk4 do you have? if it is not a AWD, and you plan to lower more then 40mm keep in mind you MAY run into problems with the sway bar rubbing on the drive shafts

If I'm not mistaken the MKIV Golf GTI had lower suspension that the 2.0 version.

Cheapest option would be a used set of MKIV Golf GTI springs but then you don't mention how low you want to go.

I don't think that there is a need at all to have adjustable lower control arms. I've regularly gotten over 25K kms with my last few sets of tyres and I'm lowered enough where the rear camber is clearly visible.
