  • Clutch problems

    Hey. I have a 1999 mk4 golf 1.8 20v

Recently when I started my car in neutral and tried putting the car in gear it wouldn't go in. I started the car in gear and it jumped forward. I worked out that it only happens every now and then. I'm not sure if what I'm doing is helping but I pump the clutch a bit (car off) and try again. Eventually it works perfect. And no issues until I start the car some other time. But I haven't not been able to get it working yet. I always seem to eventually get it to work

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Ps I have recently replaced the slave with oem replacement

    Thanks

I would guess its the master or slave cylinder.
A simple test for the clutch is to get into a high gear like 4th or 5th and drive up a hill. If the revs rise quickly but the speed does not then the clutch is slipping and needs replacement.

Who replaced the slave cylinder ? Why was it done - what were the symptoms ?

I have a problem that my mechanic says is the master cylinder, if I change from 1st to 2nd at high engine speed the gear crunches like the clutch is not engaged. It is most annoying. But the clutch itself is fine.

The slave was leaking. So I replaced it. I think ur right it will be the master. Clutch never seems to slip either

      Thanks

The clutch will only slip if the clutch plate or pressure plate is stuffed not the release system . I replaced a slave as you could feel the clutch "bleed" off if you held your foot on the peddle for a while and long story short it was the line from the master to the slave that was leaking near the slave end so just check your fluid level n take a look around the slave as the gear box dose a good job of catching leaking fluid.
Could also be a poor job of bleeding the system after the slave was replaced ? get yourself a power bleeder and you cant go wrong.

Since the spammers bought this thread back up. I though I'd add that the shifting problems I had. It was down to gearbox oil. I replaced with some redline and it is smooth as silk.
