  • Which one is the most reliable?

I am on the market for a 2 liter Golf Gen 4 or 5
Mi first priority is for a model which it is cheap to maintain and also reliable.
I would like to know which is the better auto gearbox, the 4sp or the 6sp.
    Are they sealed gearboxes?
If both of them are not serviciable and expensive to replace then I would go for a manual.

    Your inputs are appreciated

    Cheers

I've got a 2.0 i like it more and more each day. Did just replace timing belt and pump and it hasn't missed a beat since.

It is quite zippy in traffic (not fast) and the auto tranny is so smooth.

Obviously its gonna cost more to replace an auto box but shouldn't deter you.

I'd look at getting a Manual if your going to be driving in traffic, if you do your research the 01M is prone to TCC slip.

I've had mine for nearly 1 year, starting to get TCC slip. Driving 2 hours in peak hour traffic 5 days a week, which is stop start, go to 80 or 100kmh and then traffic halts again.
The car is a 2000 1.6, currently has 85,000 on the clock, engine is great but the transmission unfortunately is not.

If I knew about the 01M before purchasing, I would have got a manual even though most my travel time is in peak hour traffic.
Do some research on it before you buy, some people even have drama AFTER replacing the valve body.

I'd put it like this, you may be lucky to find a really good one, it may last a while, but when it starts to bugger up, there's no guaranteeing it can be fixed.

Thank you MCiN7 for your input, after doing some research about auto gearboxes in new european cars I will go for a manual.
I read the same dramas with auto on the Peugeot 407 and BMW cars.

In regards to the mk4/5 drama I've heard that the lower spec mk5's aren't as reliable as the mk4's. But this is only what I've heard.

And if you'd like to check out a bora, mines for sale and I haven't had a problem with it and it's got 2 years warranty as well, however I am a bit far away!! Boras are the same as the golfs except for the boot and an (in my opinion) better looking front end and steering wheel!!
