Any ideas on freight costs?

Hi everyone, although I do snoop around the forum, it's been a long time since posting a thread and when I do it's because I need something from you guys.
I apologies for that

My daughters Golf has Electric window issues, I'm going to replace the regulator (everything else is working fine).

I've seen that a few of you have purchased gear from GermanAutoParts.com from the states. On the website they explain that freight can't be calculated as its very difficult to calculate with all the parts they keep.

QUESTIONS
1. Can anyone give me there best guesstimate on the freight charges for this kind of part to Australia?
2. Would it be better to buy locally in Australia (cost wise). (The part on the G.A.P. site costs $72.50 plus freight).
3. If I could get from Australia where to buy from? (just thought dealers - but aren't they expensive?)

Window regs at local dealer were around $120 mark last time I did one.

I just bought one for a Seat Cordoba same as a golf from Ebay i got it from England and it only cost about $40 delivered .

I bought METAL replacement clips from Istanbul off ebay for around 20 AUD to my door.

I might have a little look around at ebay.

My clips are already metal, the cables somehow come unwound and jammed between the door plate and the regulator (the round plastic wheel behind the motor). The cables are all crunched up and need replacing. Block of timber currently holding window up

Just our luck the air conditioning compressor has also given up the ghost (next job)

Are you sure its the compressor, and not just the field coil (clutch) on the end ?
I've just done one and it is not a very nice job.

I've diagnosed it myself (I'm a refrigeration Mech) still couldn't quite believe it so have had 2 other independent diagnosis.
The compressor is just not pumping, clutch is fine though.

Okay I've ordered a new regulator repair kit on EBay. Coming from the UK. Found a really helplful video on how to go about it. So I'm set to go as soon as it arrives. Will let you know how how I go

Okay, kit turned up on Friday, tackled the repair on Saturday, found it quite easy really. The only problem that frustrated me no end was to try and unplug the central locking plug I persevered for about one and a half hours in the sun to get this thing disconnected. As it worked out it was easy really

If that central locking plug had not have held me up the job would have taken about 1 hour total.
The regulator repair kit cost me $57 delivered from the UK. I was quoted approx $300 from a workshop (including labour) so I'm happy I've saved some money for my daughter.

AND I learnt something too!

I would recommend anyone thinking of giving this repair a go, it's not too hard.

I also had my aircon stop working and thought it was the compressor but had a mates auto electrician check it out and found there was no "signal" going to the compressor. Took the car in for a service and got the error codes and narrowed it down to the Fan control Unit. - Part number is 1j0 919 506 with a different letter at the end (e.g. M, K, L etc). You have to get the right letter so you need to check your part. This part actually sits under the battery tray.

I'm pretty sure the compressor is faulty.
I can hear the compressor clutch kick in whenever air conditioning is switched on. With the gauges on to check refrigerant pressures the compressor is not pumping.

Can you confirm that the compressor spins when the clutch activates, ie the middle part goes around ? Maybe the clutch is slipping ?
Do the radiator fans run ?
VW want over $900 for a new compressor, but it can be had from the states for about $250.

Yes well I can recall if the centre part of the clutch spins too. I will check it out.
The radiator fans do run.
Yes compressors are quite expensive, not something that my daughter or myself can afford at this minute. So I will check this clutch again just to be sure.
