  • MKIV Golf 2l Water Pump

    Hey guys,

Just got the my car 2 days ago and i think it has never been driven over 4000rpm.

Now being a new car to me wanted to give it a bit even though i knew it wouldnt go fast then all of a sudden the dreaded beep and water gushing out of the car.

So looks to be my water pump has gone. Now since im new to VW's etc no idea where to buy from besides the dealers and refuse to pay their prices.

Where should i go to buy a new pump and how much should i be prepared to pay in parts and labour

you'll do $400 or $500 in labour alone mate, and probably $200 minimum on the pump.

When was your timing belt last replaced ?
It is common practice to replace the timing belt and tensioner when doing the water pump. Given you are pulling everything out you may as well recoup some of the labour and do the lot.
As stated above the pump itself is not the expensive part.

I just realised you have the 2.slow not the 1.8T. I know some engines have a chain not a belt.
But here is an indicator of cost for the whole shooting match.
      I've posted this before

      Prices from 2007
      Water Pump $105
      Damper Tension belt $119
      Timing Belt $68
      Thermostat $22.27
      Tensioner T/Belt $82.25
      Coolant $34.20
      Labour $80/hr $346.40
      Total $777.12

      Again in 2009.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioners, seals, coolant etc and yearly service.
      Total $727 (390 Labour / 337 Parts + tax)
      MK4 GTI - Sold
      MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
      MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

I've never seen a water on one completely fail to the point where water came gushing out. They usually split the plastic impeller, and that's it.

I have seen a non-genuine one with a steel impeller fail in an odd fashion. The bearing on the shaft gave way, causing the impeller to start wearing through the casing.

FWIW, a genuine exchange water pump is around $130, with the timing belt kit at around $220. Labour-wise, pay no more than 4 hours worth. Also worth going to a VW specialist or dealer, as a special tool is required to set the timing belt tensioner.

How do they change the belt without pulling out the power steering fluid ?

Im pretty sure its a different belt.

But i don't know these engines confuse me but powersteering normally runs off the same belt as the alternator

Bug_racer, I've never had to drain the power steering fluid to do the belt and water pump.

Sure, you unbolt the reservoir, but you can leave the rest still intact.

Did this on the weekend. Prior owner didnt get the timing belt and water pump changed at 105k. Ordered the parts from ECS tuning ($230) waited 2 weeks for arrival and got to work on the week end. Got stretch bolts for engine mount at VW dealers. Took my time and all good. Power steering doesnt need to be disconnected. Once you unbolt it it moves around enough to do the belt and pump.

Mine still had the plastic impellor that has now been replaced with a nice metal looking one. If you havent done it, i recomend doing it. Just follow the DIY on the vortex page.

Is there any benefit of the metal impeller

Yes. The benefit is it does not break !
The plastic goes off from the heat and cracks, it then lets go of the shaft and stops spinning.

Metal no doubt will last longer but careful I have seen shafts in water pumps lose there strength(shaft collapse) causing it to run at an angle the timing belt will still turn and car will run normally until water pump hit's block and due to metal impeller it jams into block causing belt to skip causing major engine damage. At every 100,000 km you should do timing belt anyway and IMO if your paying a little extra for a plastic pump it's no real big loss. The savings from a metal impeller are minor.

Yer its only a car for the Mrs and just want everything running properly. Next job is cleaning all the oil out of the engine bay. The guy i bought it from has the worth aim in the world.

Yeah, that's it. The water pump is a consumable on these things.
