  • Need Help with Rocker Cover Gasket & Others... VW Golf MK4, 2000, 1.6L, Man, ..

    Hi All,
(I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this. Please move me if needed.)

    RE: VW Golf MK4, 2000, 1.6L, Man, ..

I want to replace my rocker cover gasket due to a small oil leak, but due to this 'plastic inlet manifold' that goes over the top, it looks like I'll have to take that and possibly other parts off with it, just to get to the rocker cover gasket. So, I've got a few questions...

    1. What is the best method to accessing (and replacing) the rocker cover gasket?

    2. What other things (seals/gaskets etc) in the area should I replace whilst doing this?

    3. Is there a certain pack of gaskets/seals I can buy to do several at once? IE: 'head gasket kit'.

    4. Where is the best place to buy it?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

PS: I think I spotted/felt air escaping at the exhaust manifold (gasket), so I might do that one too.

      Hey mate, not exactly sure.

Try vortex DIY thread or try and get a bentley manual

haha, thanks, a reply at least!

Yeah, I thought about vortex, but then thought that it's mainly USA and they didn't sell the 1.6L there..

Maybe a manual is what's needed...

...But I'm sure SOMEONE on this forum has been through it before...

I you got a service book it should be in that on the data sticker there is one sticker in your boot as well.

                Thanks gr,
I'll stop my ebay search and go grab the manual right now...

I just thought I'd ask about choices and places in case there were any no-no's, bargains, best quality, etc. advice from everyone as there usually is. Ebay vs dealer, someone's good experience with a certain product/brand, that sort of thing..

My engine is an AVU 1.6Lt

What exactly is the difference with between the different 1.6Lt?

I'm not sure on that one Clarkee.

But I've been meaning to ask you, did you drive hard for your gearbox to die and need a rebuild?

Na I wasn't driving it hard when the gearbox blew but apparently just putting wider tyres can blow the gearbox..

But it gets driven hard now and no problems at all really.. Just the linkage from the gear stick is a bit loose

I've just got a job at autobarn so I'll see if we can get gaskets in for mk4's

What did the gearbox rebuild cost? And re-install costs?

I got the gearbox done at Sydney wide European autos.

If I remember it cost about $4200 for the rebuilt gearbox. It was an exchange unit so the sent me a rebuilt one which I had asked for bolts to be put in the diff instead of pop rivets. I had to send my old gearbox back.

Install cost nearly $1000 all up
