  • Key/Remote Help

    Hey Guys,

I've been reading the sticky thread at the top of the forum about making new keys. I've got a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can clear up for me.

Basically, when I bought the car, I only got 1 key. It looks like this - KeyMam LockSmith Shop | http://www.KeyMam.com-VW-2

My understanding is that this key has a light, but no remote capabilities (I don't know for sure because the internals of my key are ruined.).

My car is an '02 GTI... is it possible for me to get a key and remote like this to work with my car?

    Any help is most appreciated!

    Alex

Does your car have the sensors for remote operation mounted inside somewhere? Not sure where they are from the factory, but perhaps the interior light or in the front pillar region and near the rear window ... I thought key/fob remote was standard on GTI's in which case you'd just need the fob and a suitable key blade to cut and code.

If you know someone with VagCom, they could scan the car and check whether the module for remote central locking is present and functioning.

    Best Wishes.

I think your best option is to get a remote locking system like this eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d installed and place the RF chip from the original remote into the new remote/key. Then get the HAA key cut at your local lock smith.

        Thanks Rolf, this sound sensible.

As above, I don't really want to install this if my car has remote central locking from the factory.

If anyone knows where I should look for remote central locking sensors in the car that would be awesome. Or if anyone knows when the changeover to remote central locking happened... I have it in my head that pre 2001 GTI's didn't come with remote central locking.

        Cheers again,

        Alex

Your best bet is to go to a dealership, and quiz the parts guys on it.

The parts catalog will indicate which keys are applicable. From memory, the GTIs had the larger flip-out key with remote.

You can order them pre-cut from VW to suit your car, according to your VIN number. Then, when they turn up from Singapore around two weeks later, arrange for the service department to program them for you. They're around $400 each.

If you don't have the flip remote key then you don't have factory remote locking. The sensors and hardware will not be in the car.
That ebay kit looks like a good option. There is a DIY on VWVortex for a similar kit.
