can u supply any more information like what was last done to the car in mods or so ? if the engine bay was washed or whatever might be able to get a better idea :]
edit :
forgot to say with the afm just incase you dident know you cant wash it with normal chemicals/petrol so on i think the specialised spray was like $15-20 from a auto parts store lol had a freind wash he's with petrol and stuff it up XD

1.6 golfs hardly give trouble with air flow meters, and oxygen sensor doesnt work when the motor is cold so i would say its more than likely a coolant temp probe

Black smoke in the morning could be but would have it scanned, SAI pump or dislodged pipe to it common, therefore the super rich cold strt mix doesnt get its blast of Secondary air from the pump on start up, even sticky combi valve, seen that too. Just watch you dont get carried away by thinking the o2 sensor doesnt work cold, maybe doesnt on this engine but systems go into closed loop sooner than you think.
Drinking fuel could be a broken thermostat staying wide open, therefore the coolant temp sensor is doing its job right, so when its doin the job right and the stat is open , core temps are low and the injection pulse is wider, thus more fuel
