Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 75k service plus front rotors 288mm to 312mm

so my GTI needs a 75k service and new front rotors and i want to get my hands dirty with the help of some mechanic mates.

as i get cost price from VW id like to know what parts ill need for the 75k service and what parts ill need to upgrade my brakes from 288mm rotors to 312mm rotors.

didnt find much searching but i understand i can use my current pads and calipers but ill need caliper carriers from audi TT/S3 or V6 bora, anything else?

edit - also im still running factory monteII wheels

part numbers and advice on said upgrade would be most appreciated

i believe all/most of hte mk4 wheels clear, if you've seen the wheel on a gti or 4mo (some v5s) then it'll clear.
I had to offload my stock 15s to get 4mo 16s and a 17" spare to clear my 4motion brakes (even though i havnt fitted them yet )

so from what ive read all the oem 16s fit except the bbs rxII however im not sure ill bother with the brake upgrade, my staff pricing was:

$100 each for 6R0615301A 288mm rotors ...which is pretty good i think

          or

$180 each for 8N0615301A 312mm rotors ...still good
$220 each for 8N0615125 caliper carriers ...damn, i thought they would be more like $80-100

anyhoo fair enough, i suppose i shouldnt expect a huge discount coz i work for the same group, maybe ill go and check out some wreckers for bora V6 or gen1 TT

....and i still dont know what the 75k service entails

You can get Audi TT carriers and rotors (no pads) for a touch over $500 delivered from ECS Tuning.

Yeah I had a look at that, works out about $300 cheaper than cost price from VW ...if it is cost price, They seemed a bit reluctant to give me a price on those when I said its to upgrade my mk4. They usually go by the VIN which doesn't match.

I'm not sure the cost to benefit ratio makes it worthwhile. I don't thrash it too much but I like to upgrade rather than just replace when I need to fix something. I'll only do it if I find the carriers at a wrecker for about $50 each and some aftermarket rotors for about $150.

....anyone know a good brake fluid? I'm going to bleed the brakes either way.

I am after the carriers as well for an audi TT upgrade to my mk4 - there is no way anyone will sell you the carriers alone second hand - full units or nothing - if they sell the carriers they are stuck with the rest - i know , I've tried.

Carriers from ECS are $100 each plus postage
