Quick question on symptons of Haldex failure.

Hey guys, I went for a drive on saturday in the torrential rain and the car was playing up a little. It'd lose almost all power and sounded like it had a chronic miss. Also the traction control light would come on and then after turning the car on and off would disappear. When the rain eased a bit I gave it a bit of squirt off the line and had a lot of wheelspin in first, but now that the roads are dry it seems that its gripping again.

Now, can anyone whose had their Haldex fail tell me how much wheelspin there is on a dry tarmac. I know I could get it scanned but don't want too unless there is actually something wrong, not just me being paranoid.

I havent had my haldex fail but I can tell you that a 4k rpm launch from a stand still in the dry almost resulted in a broken neck as I wasnt expecting such a violent reaction, this was followed by almost instant redline in 1st which after I managed a disoriented gear change into second, grins and then an apology to the car that I wouldnt do that to often. There was no wheel spin at all. The same launch in the wet gave much the same result, only hearty use of the throttle in second whilst turnng could inspire the back to come and say hello to the front and then only for a short while.

Now mine isnt an R32 so you probably have about 25kw over me at the wheels but thats not enough to make a massive difference, you also have the blue controller so your violent reaction should happen even quicker than mine if it was working properly. I would say get it scanned.

Front wheels spinning in hte wet for a short while I would say is ok, as torque would then go to the back and get you off the line. Also with a little bit of lock you can swing the tail out a little bit proving the coupling is hydrolocking.

have a go at driving along a street in second and then trying a rapid U-turn... when I do this my ESP kicks in straight away and the car stops accelerating

EDIT: just out of interest, how much are blue haldexes ? It's something I'm interested in upgrading later on

APR sell them for $1675, HPA in Canada sell the same thing for $999US but I think APR have the distrubution rights. Others may know more.

The quality of tyres has a great impact on the Haldex, wheel spin and the traction control. My R32 had some cheap tyres on it, I then put some new Conti sports on it was a different car, the traction control light hardly comes on, only when I really push it does it come on.

Thanks for that guys, after using a fair bit more fuel than usual it seems to be working ok. Back wheel was turning coming out of my driveway so I'll take that as a sign that its working. Also the tires are approaching the end of their life, also in the wet they weren't the best new. Just for reference, the Haldex fuse is number 31.

Turn your traction control off, and find some grass or gravel and feed some lock in and punch the loud pedal sharply and lift off straight away. Do this in first gear and dip the clutch when you lift off, the car should spin around quick sticks.

If not, there is the possibility that the fuse for the haldex is blown, its a 5 amp (orange) fuse #31 have a look if that is burnt out and if so, replace it.

Other wise i can sell you a haldex controller, I just noticed that you already found the fuse.

So...... pulled the haldex fuse for the drive to work this morning. Haldex is definitely working, had so much wheelspin it was absurd. Pulling away in first gear a fraction harder than usual and was just shredding the tires. I honestly don't know how guys drive the stage 2 gti's. In conclusion, if anyone is doubtful of the haldex working, it is absolutely blindingly obvious. The traction available is greatly reduced.
