Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • How long does a Bora 4motion take to die after the fuel light is on?

When I bought my Bora the seller told me to be very careful about the fuel light, he said that once it comes on you have less than 8km left before it will run out.

I know the Bora 4motion has a unique fuel tank to fit around the rear diff, but it seems pretty extreme that it would run out so quick.

When I had a Jeep I once had no money and it was two days out from pay day (Jeeps are expensive to run) and I drove it to work and back (30kms) and to some meetings for two days with the light on.

I have only had the light come on twice in the Bora and both times I was already on my way to fill up, just wondering if this is something I need to keep an eye on or was the seller a little paranoid?

....Also, how accurate is your MFD display? Mine was saying 10.5l/100km when I was really doing 11.7 but now after 5 fuel ups it is pretty much spot on.

Mine's pretty accurate when I calculate it at the pump.. I average about 12l/100km (half freeway, half suburban stop/start) =[

My fuel light's only come on once but I'm sure I drove about 20km after that. Anyways it's not good to drive when the fuel tank's nearly empty as it could damage your car. Best to fill up when it's got a quarter of a tank or thereabouts.

I am currently getting 11.1l/100km but my overall average since buying the car is 11.7 as I had a couple of times where I used regular unleaded and it went up well over 12.

My daily commute is about 35km each way, 15km on busy suburban roads, 20km on open rural road 70/80 zones.

I get about 9l/100km out of mine when not trying to make cool vroom noises on mixed highway/urban. Not sure exactly how far I have driven with the light on but it must have been at least 20km on one occasion. The manual says that the light comes on when there is approximately 7-8 liters left in the tank which would be in line with my general understanding of the fuel light meaning you have about 50-80km of driving before you are transported from vw luxury to the mundane foot falcon.

The dealer was very close you should have around 8 litres when the fuel light comes on then depending on driving style and fuel consumption this should equate to anywhere around 50km or 100 km 8.0/100 =100 km but this highest figure would be hard to acheive.
I know of a test plan that will calibrate the fuel level sensor light, The fuel tank has to be empty the add 8 litres of fuel and reset the warning light. Who knows but you could reset it to come on earlier or later never tried....

He said 8kms, maybe he was confused and meant 8 litres.

But he was really adamant, as if this was a really serious thing that I had to be super careful about.

Then he must've had some wrong info. No one would be really serious about 8L of fuel. Back when I was on my P's that's all I could afford a week!

I learnt the hard way. Had just bought the Bora, the fuel light came on, I got about 10km before I ran out of fuel and had to sit on the side of the road. Next time the fuel light came on, I filled up straight away and found I filled 60 out of 62 litres. It's slowly gotten better, and now there's about 7 litres left when the light first comes on.

My first car ran out of fuel in the next street from where I picked it up. I went back and the guy who had sold it to me was gone, it had only been 10 minutes. This set the tone for what turned out to be a big lesson for me in getting ripped off buying a car. There are some things about being 17 I don't miss.

Most of the time i can fairly safely get 50km once the light goes on. Also managed to have filled the car up with 64L Average fill up is for 61L

I've got a 2.slow but I've also managed to fill up 63L or so and I've managed to go about 40 kays or so before I decided that I'd rather not run out and gave in

When my light comes on I get 50 klm easy out of reserve. Haven't really checked the fill up ltr afterwards though. I'll check next time. If I get 500 klm out of a tank I'm happy
