  • Golf Mk4 GTI with 200,000km's?

    Hey Guys,

I'm in need of some educated advice!

I'm looking at buying a 2001 Golf GTI for my first car (After drooling over the Mk5/Mk6 R32/R for years)

The particular car I'm looking at however, has done 200,000 km's.

Despite this, the car has full service history from Volkswagen and the owner has said the car is running perfectly
    mechanically.

Obviously the reason I'm considering it is the price.

It's several thousand $'s cheaper than the same car with 50,000 less km's, but i'm concerned about a 4 cylinder car
    with such high km's.

Basically what I'm asking is how are these cars with 200,000km's on the clock?

Will I be buying something that is likely to cause me a lot of problems over the next few years?

I'd like to hold on to it for the next 4 yrs (then upgrade to an R32 ), and I live inner city, so it'll be driven
    100-200kms Max per week.

    Massively appreciate any advice!

    Josh.

EDIT: Also guys, I'd be looking at getting it chipped. Does the age/km's limit me in that regard?

Wouldn't bother me really with a full history. At least 2 cambelt changes and a waterpump.

Rear bushes in the wishbones will most likely be shot.

My S3 has over 200K on it and goes like a train, it is chipped and has been for years.

200 sounds high but it's all about it's upkeep. If it has logbooks and you get it checked it might be alright. Also check the suspension. If it's still on factory fitted and never been replaced then it'll be a little worse for wear.. Good luck with it all. Keep us updated and whatcha do.
How are allowed to drive a turbo car on your red p's though??? Unless you're not in Australia?

Just bought a V5 bora cheap as it has over 300,000k's...

The massive saving is well worth the fact that it may need a few parts...
Overall, out car is going well (except for my stupidness), runs smooth, good economy, great handling...

On my todo list is upper timing chain/guides (V5/V6 only), front control arm suspension bushings, and that's about it...

I've seen that the 1.8 a3 is p plate legal; so one could only assume that the gti mk4 would be to seen as though it is the same engine. But seen were talking about the rta, its a dark zone.

Isle of Capri is in QLD.
QLD P plate laws restrict use of turbo-charged or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered.
So the GTI and the A3 1.8T are out for P platers in QLD.

Maybe the OP is a bit older and wiser

                Queenslanders cop it hard

I recently come across that link above, I find it a kick in the teeth cause it was updated the day I bought my VR would have opted for the 1.8t either A3 or GTI.

If you scroll down a bit it shows a list of what the rta deem to be - "moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles"

                  Hey Guys,

Thanks a lot for the replies.

After your advice I was thinking it wouldn't be too much of an issue due to being well looked after.

However, I've decided to spend a decent amount more and am looking into getting a 06/07/08 Polo GTI with relatively low Km's. Do really
like the car and it does have potential if I wanted to chip it and tack it for a spin around a few of the tracks we have up here.

Also I am a P Plater (a responsible one as well ), however QLD TMR do have exemptions if the car has a Turbo, but is not considered a performance vehicle.

Again thanks for the help guys!

Will catch you around, most likely from the Polo section of the forum..

                  Josh.

                    Hi Mate

I had a Mk4 Gti that had close to 230k on the clock. It was a 2000 model and never ever gave me any trouble. Used to just full her up and drive it!!!
It had a full service history and I only ran it on premium 98 oct. Reliable as..........

                        It's a serious cock up isn't it.

I suppose it's cause the mk4 golf has the GTI badge slapped to it, whereas the a3 is simply that..
