2001 Golf Head Unit Problem

Hey there guys,

I have a 2001 Golf GL that I've had since January of this year. It's a great car and I've been loving it. Anyway, I've been wanting to change the head unit for a while, so I bought the three things I was told I need off of Liquid Ice from the UK. I got the ISO Loom adapter, the aerial booster and the removal keys.

So, they came yesterday and I was looking forward to changing out the units (I already have the unit by the way, it's from my brother's old car, but it's a nice one), only I encountered trouble trying to get the old one out. It's the Eurovox single DIN CD player, it's manual lists it as the 4860 model, more specifically the 4865VW1 I think. The keys don't work on this unit, it seems that there is just metal along the gaps on either side; there are no slots for the keys. Anyway, I did some research and read some things about getting things in the holes on each corner, so I tried the BBQ skewers in each hole as someone else suggested, but no luck. It just doesn't seem to want to loosen, no matter what I do, it feels like it just doesnt want to come out.

If anyone could give me a little advice, I would greatly appreciate it. There's not much more frustrating than waiting nearly two weeks for the tools to complete a simple, quick job, only to find you can't do it!

I'd go straight to the back of the cage, might take 20-30 minutes to remove the trims but saves stuffing around with keys.

When you get the cage out, you can easily unclip the head unit with some flat blade screw drivers.

With the cage out you can also do a neater install with all the cables (cable ties and tape) as there will be a lot more room to fiddle.

Thanks for your quick response and useful information, but before going through with that guide, my brother and I did a little more fiddling with the normal release holes and it eventually came out. So that's all sorted. It seems like as though the guides may have been bent or something in the top left hole and the rods we were using simply kept missing it.

Sometime today, when I get a little time, I'll be getting some solderless ends and will start hooking up all of the cables from the other head unit's loom and it should be all be good. Am pretty excited!

Hey, so we've got the head unit all hooked up and working and it sounds great, however it isn't really installed properly yet. It slides in to the slot and sits, but there in no obvious way of securing it in there. Is there some way of doing it without taking apart the dash at all? I've seen people mention in forums that they got the eurovox unit out and installed a new one without any mention of going through all that other stuff. Anyway, looking forward to your help, thanks in advance.

The head unit should have a metal cage that is slid on it.

There are pins near the front that you can bend outwards so the cage is secure.
