    Depends on the mechanic.

If it were me, i would change it. Just to be safe and keep the car in tip top shape. Im fussy with my cars

100,000....doesnt need to be done any earlier.

thats when i got mine done...however make sure he does it with the water pump too

its 120,000k or 5 years, whichever comes first.. and do the water pump just to be sure. the stock ones have a plastic impeller which seperates from the shaft and fails.

R32 does have chain drivien timing gear and it will only need replacing if the chain becomes noisy or the tensioner fails.

I dont want to burst any bubbles its 4years or 120k for a 4 cylinder or 4years and 90k on a V6 VW or Audi. The tensioner also reqs to be done. On the Gti, very good idea to inspect the water pump when you are in this far, they have a bad habit of failing, impeller is plastic. It breaks down and/or spins on the pump shaft when faulty. I know a very good tech in Brizzy who can do your belt for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And on the R32 if the chain tensioner fails you will be doing more than a chain and tensioner!!!!!!!!!!! No Fear!

What kind of price should you expect to pay to have this done?

I think he got quoted around 400 to have the belt change not sure if that included pump or not.

We just both thought it odd that the mechanic wants it done at 60ks im just wondering why he would and so is my mate who owns the car

Jimmymac, I saw an engine out of an Audi last week that had just passed 100k and the timing belt snapped. Engine dropped compression, and you know, the rest is history (well that engine was).

Doesn't the service manual state to change it at 90k ?

When the Timing Belt is changed, the water pump is replaced as mentioned before with a metal variant and the plastic impeller is brittle.

MJM Autohaus were doing good deals before on the kit. Depends whether you can get cheap shipping (note: free shipping ).

Next Audi i do i will copy the service recommendations. Im sure im right but im doubting it now. Definately 4 years and up to 1997 it was every 90k for v6 and 4cyl but im sure its all changed. But hey lets face it at 90k its a good idea to have it done.
Watch this space i wont let it rest
                        Cheers
