  • What oil to use - Bora 4motion

I want to do an oil change on my Bora, I have been worried about the noisy lifters on cold starts and my oil looks quite thin and dark so I think it's definitely time.

What is the best oil to use? I am assuming fully synthetic is best?

Also are there any special tools needed to do an oil change on a Bora v6?

So what do I need to do an oil change on a Bora 4motion? I am used to Jeeps and my stupid Holden ute that require nothing more than a socket set and a standard old oil filter clamp thingy.

wow, thanks for the info, that is great.

Is there anywhere local to get that stuff or is it better and cheaper from ECS? From my recent experiences with VW dealers I'm guessing they charge ten times what all that stuff costs?

On the ECS site under the price written in green is a note whether or not the item is in stock. Try and find items in stock if you can, because ECS do ship very quickly if it is in stock.

Needless to say mate, even with shipping we have an awesome USD rate and its WAY cheaper than buying it here.

Ordered those 5 items, they were all listed as in stock, $165 including delivery.

Next up will be Haldex filter, fluid, drain plug, washer and Haldex filter tool, $161 delivered.

              I like ECS

I just realised ... this would be my first oil change and I'm not sure what the previous owner put in it (only had the car 2 months)... should I change the whole oil ? Or would it be OK to put some 5w30 in straight away ? would that damage it ?

I'm not sure what VW standard oil to use in the VR6 but I know for the 1.8T, it says to use VW 502.00 oil (go shopping for oil at auto shops and you'll find some oils to Have this listing). Check your manual for the specifics, it's not about the W rating for these engines.

It won't damage it to just top it up with good oil, but if you don't know when the last service was, if the oil in the car is not looking good or if you have timing chain or tappet noise a full oil change can't hurt. Most people around here seem to be of the opinion that you should change you oil every 5000kms so I plan on that schedule (with the kms I currently do that is an oil change every 10 weeks)

I wouldn't use just any old 5W30, get the Castrol EdgeSport or another reputable fully synthetic oil.

From everything I have heard the Castrol EdgeSport 5W30 is the oil of choice for a Bora V6, it is 502.00 compliant, it's fully synthetic and it's not outrageously expensive.

I am very happy with it in my car and I will continue to use it.

I have just recently done a change and used shell helix ultra 5w-40. Costs about $70 for 6 litres (5+1) but I can say it made quite a noticable difference in both engine noise and the smoothness of the engine. Really is horses for courses once you get into the high end synthetics, I know shell is technically a semisyn but so is pretty much everything except mobil 1 which at approx $100 for 5 litres is in a much high class with lubricants like fuchs etc.

I can say that at cold startup I have a small amount of rattle as the oil warms up, kind of expected at 165k but within a few minutes she is nice and quiet again and only starts to make a little noise after a very serious workout. And if you are doing that kind of driving regularly then you will be using a much better quality oil that wont break the film at high temps and so on... my 2c

I went to do another oil change on the weekend and found that Castrol EdgeSport is no longer. It has been replaced with Edge Titanium .....and Edge Titanium appears to be crap!

I took a punt and used the Edge Titanium on the recommendation of the guy at SuperCheapAuto, he said it is the new version of EdgeSport. But instantly after the oil change the car is now making more lifter noise than ever before, even with 4000km old EdgeSport it was quieter. The rattle fades after warm up but is still there faintly all the time. If I drive through a tunnel or next to a wall I can hear it clearly.

I think I might cut my losses, dump this Edge Titanium garbage and try the Shell Helix 5W40.

Any other recommendations? I don't mind paying $$$ if it's worth it.
