  • 2001 Golf 1.6 Slow Crank

Hey guys, am new here, but looks like a great forum! So much stuff!!

Anyway, in January of this year, I bought myself a 2001 MK4 Golf 1.6 GL 5sp. I've been very happy with the car and love to drive it. Unfortunately I had to replace the clutch as it seems the previous owner rode it. Was worn down to the rivets and had started knocking tabs off of something, the spigot bearing I think.

Anyway, recently, like in the last week, it's unfortunately developed another problem. The main symptom is slow cranking. Usually it cranks fast and fine, but over the last, say 4 - 5 days, it has started cranking really slowly and this morning it seemed like it almost didn't want to make it. Other symptoms are that it seems like as though the power might have been lost at some point, as this morning, when I was driving, I noticed the time had been reset. It read 0:02, only just a couple of minutes after I had started it.

Note I had never had this problem before it was in the shop for the clutch, although it didn't have the problem until almost a week after that.

When I get home today, I'll see if I can check the charge on the battery. Just for clarification though, in my research, it would seem that the appropriate things to test first are, battery voltage charge, battery load test, cable corrosion and charge at starter end of cables.

If this problem sounds alot like something any of you have had before, I would very much appreciate your opinion. I'm afraid I just might not have the money to replace another expensive part like the starter after having just spent over $400 on a new clutch.

    Thanks in advance.

Definitely sounds like the battery. Slow cranking is a very good sign of this combined with the fact that when you were cranking it the batt voltage was probably so low that it was too low to power the clock and thus why it reset.

Check your terminals etc but i'm 99% sure you'll find its done its day! Unfortunately old batteries dont like the cold either so when you most want them to work when its wet rainy cold and your late for work is just when a dying battery will often decide to strike :/

        Battery

        Thanks for the reassurance guys.

I will try and get one as soon as possible.

Any suggestions on what kind of battery would be the best to use? Also how much it might cost?

        Again, thanks in advance.

Good battery suppliers will know the correct battery. You probably have 2 choices, standard or heavy duty. Expect to pay $120 - $160.

Sorry, forgot to tie it off for curious readers. Went to the local battery shop and had a new one fitted for around $140 and it hasn't had any trouble since.
