  • Advice please. Things to look out for purchasing a GTI 2000-2004

    Hi there guys.

I would really appreciate some advice. Im looking to buy a 2000-2004 VW Golf GTI. I want to spend between 10-12k. Would this be a wise investment for a cool little second car? What things should I look out for

    Thanking you in advance.

Mate i,ve got an 02 and like it.Bit slow off the mark but solid and picked up for 12k with 84k kms last year.No dramas yet and phenomenal on fuel.I usually give it a bit but last tank changed up at around 2k revs and babied it and got 700 kms before fuel light came on.Can be prone to gremlins i,m told but so far so good.Have resisted urge to mod.(Barely)

Mate, good choice with the mk4 gti, not the fastest gti (actually the slowest) but a great looking car that can be turned into a pocket rocket quite easily. There are a few things to look out for when buying a mk4 window regulators are a major one, my car bares the scares from the previous owner fixing both front windows. Obviously look for a car with log books and good service history, with 12k you should be able to get one with fairly low kms(sub 100k). Oh and good luck trying not to mod it, haha

Might also want to look out for cracked PCV pipes. And perhaps look for any signs of sludge (can only really tell by taking the rocker cover off but under the oil cap could be signs) oh also see if the cam adjuster (right next to the top breather pipe) gasket is leaking as it can be expensive to change unless you diy

And yeah, good luck too with not modding it :-P.
