  • exhaust question... how to join ???

hi all i'm trying to install my new exhaust ( want to do it myself ) so i have run in to a small problem. joining the DP and the CATBACK sections...

the DP is a 42 DD (steel) with included cat. and is in modular form. it included a 3in to 2.5 in adaptor. then i have a 2.5in catback (awe, T304)

the problem is to connected them, don't know if i have to create a sleeve on one side or flanges? or just weld? any advice would be awesome as i want to do the install this week ready for the wknd ... and will def post up pics and related video of new sound.

    thanks

They say that everything can be fixed using gafa tape.... But in all seriousness I don't see why you couldn't just butt weld the ends together. In the pics I can't see any flex pipe, you need this for fwd cars

One would assume that you would use the standard clamp that connects the stock dp to the stock catback? Both of those parts would assume that you were connecting them to stock opposing pieces so the clamp should fit shouldnt it?

the flex pipe is further up near where it connects to the turbo.

when i was under the car, it looked to me that the stock mk4 gti exhaust system is one piece, (please correct me if im wrong) so i need to find another way.

Weld it together or go buy a pair of flanges and weld them on, but there is already a flange there so just but weld them together

They are one piece from the factory, as they go on before the back axle etc. If you have a close look forward of the rear silencer you'll find a couple of dot punch looking marks on the pipe. If you buy a new back box from VW it comes with a sleeve type clamp the holds the box onto the forward section of exhaust. So you would split the original exhaust where the marks are.
