  • Creaking in front end of the Bora V6

    Hey guys,

I'm new here and have been scouring the forum for the last couple of hours, some very interesting discussions. I've had my 2001 V6 Bora 4Mo for the last 2 years and absolutely love the car to bits! But almost since the day i got it (i'm the 3rd owner), I've been experiencing a creak in the front of the car.

At first i thought it might have been something to do with the suspension but the creaking isn't consistent with the suspension bouncing up and down and the creak itself isn't always present. Generally when the car is cold there is no freak and as it heats up the creak is present. Then sometimes the creak starts up when i first start the car up for the day. We are talking quite a loud and damn annoying sound.

I've had a VW Specialist look at it and we began by replacing the bushes and sway bar links. The creaks disappeared for about a day or 2 and then reappeared. The next port of call is to change the ball joints over. Has anyone had a similar problem or any ideas on what it could be?

    Cheers,

    Geoff

My front end creaks were fixed by greasing the front sway bar bushes.

Ive replaced complet sway bars because of this, same sway bar as an Audi TT. The plastic sleeve breaks away from the roll bar. New bushes and greasing only last a little while. Its the heat of the exhaust that stuff them. Sounds like an old bed spring i bet. I fitted 2 sway bars to the same TT and at the finish up we fitted non wearing sleeves which came in 2 halves, these sat on the sway bar then fit the bushes, never had any more squeeks, Old skool fix , but did the job. Now that was moons ago but the same old creaks occur, so ill try and find out where we sourced the 2 half sleeves. they work wonders and im sure there will be some call for them here, always have meant to chase it up , thanks for the reminder

        Cheers guys,

Yeah i sounds like an old bed spring, best way to describe it! Bloody loud, and when you're driving in an undercover parking lot like at Southland or Crown Casino the noise is even worse.

JMac, i don' think my car has a sway bar at the moment, although i could be wrong. It's pretty much stock standard. The bushes were also re-greased when i had them changed. What exactly are the sleeves?

Your car came with swaybars stock. Not beefy ones, but they're there.

I've got a terrible front end creak as well that happens when going over bumps when the car is warm. The suspension refresh kit didn't fix it like I was hoping, so changing the sway bars might be a good thing to try next. Two birds with one stone - better handling and getting rid of the damn creak.

I have some awesome clunking coming from the rear of my 4mo as well, looking at the roselinks it doenst look there are any bushings at all so I think that is the culprit. Hopefully I get get it fixed under the statutory warrenty as I bought the car from a dealer but I doubt they will spend extra money to put sleeves in, does anyone have a link to the part ?

Ok the fix we done was using DB4 glacier bushes, done deal. As mentioned this was moons ago on a TT, exact same set up. If anyone in Brizzy has a creaky bed spring Golf , Beetle or Bora let me know and you can be the test piece for me to get some sleeves made up
                  cheers

Any idea what size? Seems there are 23mm and 21mm bars.

I have to go under there to replace the control arm bushes, so I figured for $20 odd from ECS I might as well replace these and tie rods etc.

But they offer both sizes on the site.

Hoping this will slove the creaking, groaning and clunking that is going on.

yeah i have the exact same problem with my gti
it's not the suspension, and is usually only present when the car is warm, particularly in hot weather.

haven't really looked into it much because i don't know where to start!
would be great if someone knows a solution

Already posted the solution mate, Glacier bushes for the sway bar and new sway bar bushes. Measure up the bar and get glacier bushes form your local engineering shop. They are non wearing bushes. As before mentioned , and many times before the exhaust is next to the sway bar and will also be worse in hot weather, it is the sleeving that rots off the sway bar and creaks like an old bed spring . Fixed a Few TTs with the exact same problem. I have a couple of Brisbane candidates needing the glacier bushes, will give feedback and im sure they will too
                          cheers
