Need a Machinist to make up a MkIV Wheel Bearing Puller.

  • Need a Machinist to make up a MkIV Wheel Bearing Puller.

    I have drawn up, and attached, the basic Dims for the parts that I need. If anyone here wants to give me a quote, or knows of someone who does small jobs like this, please let me know.
    Feel free to use these drawings for yourselves too, I can't take credit for the designs, I got them from VW Vortex.

    Drawings - To be used with a length of M16 Threaded Rod as per VW Vortex Thread.

    Hey mate can't help you with the machining but you might wanna chuck some tolerancing on there so that A & B fit into each other. Also should there be some tapped holes in some of those parts??? not just 16mm through holes?

      Good point on the tolerancing, I'll update the PDF in a sec. As for the threads; it goes with an m16 length of all thread and a couple of nuts, so nothing needs to be threaded.

            Rhyno, check your tolerancing, you have a potential size-for-size fit (Part A upper tolerance 76.00, Part B lower tolerance 76.00) I'd suggest a D10/h9 fit: Part A 76.00/75.93 Part B 76.22/76.10, easy to machine in mild steel and a nice fit.

            You should dimension the step in Part A seperately, at the extremes of fit the step could potentially be only 1mm long (11.5-10.5) At least 2.5mm should be OK for location, and place a note on the drawing that all burrs & sharp edges are to be removed.

            Clearance drill for M16 is 16.25mm.

            For what it's worth, I use +/-0.15 for untoleranced dimensions.

              Thanks for your input Frankenstat, much appreciated. I've updated the drawings per your comments, however I was unsure on the dimensioning of the clearance holes. As is fairly obvious, I don't design machined parts often; switchboards are a different beast altogether.
              Any idea what I should roughly pay for something like this?

                  The machine shop next door estimated $200. That may seem expensive, but I was told if it's a one-off, the cost would be high. If you were having these produced on a CNC machine by the several hundred, the unit cost would dramitically reduce.

                      It was never going to be cheap, Rhyno, commercial quantity is what brings the unit cost down. Similarly for a CNC set up your initial programming cost seems excessive but when you turn them out by the hundred the cost reduces per unit to a much more realistic amount. Bear in mind that I was given a very rough quote, I'm in WA, you may get a better quote where you are located.

                        Yeah of course, I understand that completely. If I knew of someone with access to the tooling and some scrap, it could be made pretty cheaply, but to get it made at full rates and from new stock is, of course, expensive. I expect that a lot of the cost is in time. Anyway, I'll see what I come up with. Thanks again for your efforts.

                          No worries, Rhyno, if you were in Perth, I could have helped you out, probably would have cost you a six pack of beer for the machine shop.
