Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HID Lights for High Beam

VW Golf Mark 4 2001 model. The lights on the car have a seperate low beam and high beam bulbs (h1, h7). I have fitted a HID Conversion kit to the Low Beam which are great but now I was wanting to have bright hi beam as they are currently using Xexon bulbs (standard). My question is as high beam is not used all the time and is used quickly to flash people etc can you use HID as there is a delay in them warming up.

Or if I cant use HIDS what do you recommend

anybody using a H1 and H7 bulb isn't likely to be using proper gear for HIDs...

I do hope they are installed properly... amount of speds installing ebay kits and irritating me at night is starting to really piss me off...

Impossible to properly install HIDs into the standard reflector fittings.

Do the world a favour and remove your illegal (yes, that's right) and dangerous (you'll be spraying dazzling light all over the place) HID retrofit kit.
        Nothing to see here...

Just got myself a set of low beam H7 bulbs (white light) does a great job, no need to HID them on a MK4, plus as Manaz said they are illegal

I love my aftermarket projector headlights and xenon upgrade and in 4 years haven't been high beamed once and have had the car pass police and insurance inspection.

That's lucky for you - at least you did them in projectors though. Putting HIDs into standard reflectors is outright stupid.

That said, Xenon != HID. I assume yours as HID, not just a filament style bulb with Xenon gas in it...

Yeah i didnt want to put xenons without projector headlights. Mine are proper xenon's with the ballasts etc. I orginally purchased "xenon" globes and they were just halogen globes dipped in blue paint haha
