  • 1st LONG drive and 1st MOD now done :)

    Hey all,

Just reporting back after my trip to the 12 (9) apostles. What an amazing trip!

On saturday just gone (sunny, slightly mild) my partner and friend and myself went for a drive down the great ocean road. Over 600km later and the good part of tank of petrol gone - what an amazing drive. If you've never done it - you must. That road would be fun even in a fiat niki!!! But inevitably - it was way more fun in the GTI.

    My complaints about the car:

Other than a little bit more omf (this will soon be addressed with a chip) I was also a bit suprised with the body roll.

For the record - the speed limit along there is 80km/h but there are very few oportunities to actualy hit that speed so cornering was fun! One of my next things to do is definetly to address the bodyroll and stiffen up the front in particular. There were a few sharp corners and the nose took quite a dive as we 'coasted' through them.

The breaks were good, although I wasn't really pushing the car, there was still lots of breaking. Not an ounce of fade was noticed at all!

I also think bigger wheels will help with the cornering and that off the line grip.

The rider was very comfy, and it was warm enough to cruise along with the sun roof open. There is some amazing scenery along that road. It's by far in my opinion the best coastal drive I've done to date.

So what's the first mod I hear you ask...

You'll have to wait untill tomorrow to see the pictures. By far - it my favourite mod so far (not hard - it's also the only one!)

    gtimk5 - hush hush!!!

Oh - btw. The apostles were quite spectacular too!

The suspension on the Mk4 is very soft. The first improvement I did on my old one was Konis and springs Within 24 hours of buying it new. Its not hard to get seasick in em!!!
Cant wait to see the mods 99, should make it a lot nicer on long drives!!!
The great ocean road gave me no grief back in 2001 but I was in a kombi!
    Cheers, Andrew

                  More like razzled and dazzled!

We ran into a few problems yesterday and we decided against proceding due to bad weather. Oh - how I want to tell you all now what it is but you'll have to wait with baited breath for a little longer...

Have to admit when I was testing driving GTI's I wasn't impressed by the stock handling at all. I thought it was weird going from a 2+2 coupe into a larger car, but I felt the roll alright.

A couple of Golfs had some work done to it, even with coilovers that didn't feel that strong either - they felt a little rocky.

Have to admit in my golf when I went on a little bit of a twisty ride, I felt like I was on two wheels once after a little scandinavian flick through a roundabout at speed.. but I assume this would be the the car being a lot more beefier. My coupe has had a bit of work done to that, but you sure feel the difference doing the same thing with the Golf against a 1050kg coupe at the same speed.

Sorry for taking so long with the pictures. Having technical issues with the camera getting pictures up.... (I think the problem lies between the keyboard and chair however!)
