  • What oil do you guys use?

    I'm planning on changing my oil sometime over the next week or two. I have an oil filter, but I'm stuck on what kind of oil to use. I called my local dealership, and they recommended fully synthetic 15/40 Castrol.

    Can anyone recommend any brand/type/rating oil to use? Should I go fully synthetic rather than a synthetic blend? I have a 2001 GTi with a GIAC chip if that makes any difference.

    good question,,,,id be interested to see what everyone is using on their mk4 gti.maybe ill sticky this thread when its nearly done.

      castrol 0w40 coz i couldnt find the mobil 1 fully syn

            Hi.. ive always used Mobil 1 fully syn...(until i drove a diesel).. Having a modern car always use 100% syn... being syn, it doesnt contain the nasty solids that break down the oil.. + no impurities...
            Motul is great stuff....but pricey...... and not always easy to find... If you use mobil 1 your getting great oil thats available everywhere...
            ie: if your oil is ever low....any mobil servo will have 1 litre bottles to top you up....
            or get the pricey stuff and keep some in the boot.....
            ...... But dont go "cheap" on your oil!!.. you have invested in a great car.. Help keep her healthy..
            ...p.s.... pick an oil and try to stick with it... Dont chop and change with each oil change..... not good....

                Mobil 1 5w-50.

                Will be changing to royal purple if I can find a supplier though

                  I had that in my old bommy holden as well... OMG felt like a .. perhaps .. R32 killer...
                  you know what I mean, well. big difference it made. But seriously couldn't feel the equvalent smoothness in the golf, I would keep using it though.

                  I think 3 times I have bought it, always the last bottle in kmart/ supercheap and on discount. Consider me lucky

                      Added to the FAQ thread.

                      In my MKIV, I am pretty sure that GTIMKV used Fuchs oil in it, but I am not too sure what grade.

                      My short addition to this is that if you are running a thin oil and the car is also running rich, you should be careful as fuel can make it past the rings and end up thining out the oil prematurely as well as damage the oil filter making it become more brittle and less effective.

                        I've used Shell Helix Ultra in my cars and I haven't had a problem.

                        I am looking at using the elf Excellium GP 5W-40 for my next change. It's VW approved as well, so I'll see how that goes for the next two changes, as there will be some mileage coming up soon in

                          i drive a V6 bora but using Fuchs 10W-40 full synthetic
                          when i drove turbo car used Mobil 1 5W-50 always worked well! (about six years) was sluggish on turbo but ok! Motul 10W-50(40) good too(bit thinner)

                              I have bought the following,

                              MOTUL 4100 Turbolight
                              10W-40 Synthetic API: SL / CF
                              5Liter

                              It's a semy-synth, is that ok or should I go with

                              MOTUL 8100
                              5W-40 100% synthetic API: SL / CF
                              5Liter

                              Also I got a MANN filter from HSY parts in Sth Melbourne, are they ok ?
