Random missfire .. no error codes

As per title the car has developed a random missfire over the last week.....
Car is fine then under load the other day it missed, then today under load it missed but continued to miss on and off for 5min then went back to normal with no error codes ?
Should i just bite the built and buy new coils n ignition control module ? or should i be looking at something else.

Check the misfire counter with VCDS. That way you can pinppoint the cylinder.

I dont currently have access to VCDS ,all I have is a V-checker and it is returning no errors ? Im currently checking all wires to see if something is loose or damaged that gives me the randomness of the isuue.

Now have VCDS but cant seem to find this missfire counter you mention ?

Guess details of the car would hepl too...... German built 1.8t with me3.8 ecu

Coils are pretty reliable on these, but if you have the ign module on the airbox, then thats my guess
