  • Mk IV Factory Foglight Question

Hi, I have a question for someone with a Mk IV Golf with the factory fitted foglights in the headlight assembly.

If you have the foglights ON with low beam headlights ON and then you select high beam - do the foglights go OFF whilst the high beam is ON?

Or do the foglights continue to operate when the highbeams are on?

Just wondering how they are wired here.

    Thanks

The fogs turn off when hi beam is on. There is a law which says they need to do this.
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

Thats interesting - that's what I thought too. Thanks very much.

Can I ask what year your Golf is?

That's how they are in the UK as well.

On my friends Aussie Bora however the factory fogs stay ON with the high beam.

There is no foglight relay fitted in position 3 in the additional relay plate under the dash.

This relay is only fitted for the purpose of cutting off the fogs when high beam is selected (its not a load reduction relay for the bulb current or anything).

I downloaded the ADR that covers this as well and it says that the fogs have to work with the park, low AND high beam. (ADR 13/00 Clause 6.3.7.).

"It must be possible to switch the front fog lamps on and off
independently of the main-beam headlamps, the dipped-beam headlamps
or any combination of main- and dipped-beam headlamps."

Seems very stupid that they are required to work with high beam in the ADR - kind of defeats the purpose of foglights.

Then there are sometimes State Traffic Acts that seem to contradict the ADR's as well.

I am fitting Bora R fogs to my .:R32 so just trying to establish what the hell is required to be technically legal.

They are also going to be Coming Home Lights , so I can wire them whichever way is required.

I also found an ADR covering DRL's and they are supposed to switch off once the headlights come on but that doesn't seem to stop the new Commodores with those LED strips on the front bumper that were recently released.

If yours go off with high beam from the factory, then that shall be my guide.
