Mk4 Golf - stalled in flooding now difficult to change gears

My Golf (2001 1.6l manual) stalled in flash flooding on Friday (yes, I know...dumb). Anyway we pushed the car out of the water and it started and I went home. Car drives OK except it is now hard to change gears (difficult to put into gear, although sometimes gears feel normal). Is it possible that water could have gotten into the transmission? Any advice is appreciated.

Depends how long you were in the puddle and how deep it was but sounds like there is water and possibly even some other muck in there. Best thing to do would be to get the gearbox oil checked for crud and probably get the oil changed. When emptying you'll be able to see any crap thats got into the gearbox floating in the oil.

After dealing with flooded vehicles before, just be on the safe side and drain all fluids (engine and gearbox oils, brake fluid, PS fluid), it's really not that big a job and can potentially save hassles in the future. Potential issue is maybe some water got into your brake fluid (which is also the same fluid for your hydrauic clutch) and has negated partial use of your clutch, don't know how likely this is as a scenario but after bleeding my entire braking system on saturday, there was more dirty fluid coming out of the clutch beed valve than any of the brake calipers!

My Bora stalled too and after i pushed it out, started after 10 mins and seem to drive ok. Was packing it for awhile as I had just got it serviced on Friday!
