I have never really researched (don't have a GTI), but AEM, neuspeed, APR, VF engineering

Have a look on ECS website perhaps as a start?

A cotton panel filter with a modified stock air box works surprisingly well. Search VWVortex for SwissCheese mod.

Personally I have a BMC airbox, with a flexhose collecting air from under the battery.

Remember that if you lower the intake level you increase the chance of sucking water into the engine.
