  • mk4 gti wipers

Hi folks.Anyone else had any issues removing windscreen wipers on the mk4.I have been looking at getting the ecu number for a tune but have had no joy with removing wipers after removing 13mm nuts.Tried quite forcefully, used wd40 yada yada but no luck.Anyway of checking ecu number without removing or vag?
    Thanks

    Wiper arms.

Undo the bolt. Then pull like crazy.
I can be a bit easier if you put the arm in the lifted position.

yeah it can be a little fiddly.
but remember you only need to remove the middle one to get to the ecu.
there is no need at all to remove the rain tray, once you've got the middle wiper off, you can get to it. (wedge something under the rain tray though when you're removing the ecu)

but yeah as JustCruisn said, they seem to come off easier when you pull them off the windscreen. don't just try twist radially (i.e. in the motion the wipers normally move), also try wiggle them a bit laterally if you're having trouble. (i think that's half the reason why it works when you wiggle them in the lifted position)

as mcdub is saying. The easiest way without any fancy tool is to put the wiper in the up position off the screen. That removes the spring tension off the shaft of the wiper. Once you have done that just rock it and it should just work its way off.

Depending on the car sometimes its nice to draw a texta line across the shaft onto the wiper arm so its easy to align when its going back on. Something that will clean off easy obviously though.

Yes good tip. If you don't align them well they will hit the edge of the windscreen - very annoying click sound.

trying to save a possible problem if tuner doesn,t have the right file for my particular ecu number.I assumed the aus aug mk4 ecu,s would be generic but no?

You can check it with VCDS, it's pretty likely the right file will be on hand if you cannot access the ECU.
