  • misfiring, ticking and pressure drops

    g'day guys

recently my car has been acting up on me, when idling it sometimes misfires and when giving it a bit of stick into second it will fix itself up again and run fine. it has a really loud ticking noise and when misfiring sounds like the exhaust is falling off.
Another thing is on my oil pressure gauge it seems when i accelerate the needle goes down it used to sit around 30 - 50 psi, at the moment it will easily drop below 20psi.
im no mechanic and dont have the time or money at the moment to get it checked out, so i thought id come on here and see what you guys have to say. i drive it as little as possible and am scared to take it out for long because it really isn't sounding healthy at the moment.

    cheers fellas.

What kind of engine is it? What mods have you done? Have you had a compression test done? Is the engine oil or coolant milky? Just trying to cover all bases. Oil pump could be buggered too. Also, I wouldn't drive it at all... It may lead to more terminal damage.

ok so its a 99 mkiv gti, 1.8L t, Remus exhaust, not sure what model is, and no i havent done anything about it as of yet, i was going to buy some oil today but the rain was too full on and like i said i try my hardest not to drive. I need to check the dipstick but i had it serviced about 4 - 5 months ago. its in need of a change but definitely shouldn't be acting as it is. im hoping to organise a mechanic next week. but i have a strong feeling there will be a list of problems

its previously misfired but like i said it would start and stop doing it, now it does it constantly and i barely have enough power to get up my drive way, im real worried :'(
sorry i cant fill in all the blanks guys, i no this isn't much help ay haha

To me it sounds like a buggered oil pump, and the lack of power and misfire could be a buggered turbo as a result of the lack of oil pressure. This is just my opinion though. I have seen this with the diesel engines I work on, but one of the VW specialists may have a more experienced opinion. Either way, the more you start it, the more you could be damaging it, and the more out of pocket you could be. I think this goes beyond an oil change now.

I am thinking bung oil pump, tappets not pressurised properly, valves rattling and general poor running.

Don't be going any where you don't have to, until the sump has been off for a look at the strainer on the oil pump pick up.
