Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Headlight problem

Hey guys my headlights have been playing up lately and all of a sudden they stopped working so i opened the bonet and scoped around and found that a lil box (i asume a computer of some sort) connected to the front left headlight was dangling and actually seemes to be smacking against the pulleys... its indented about 3 mil on one side and has taken a huge beating. and only alf the writing on is atcually visible as its been scraped of. My bro had installed new lights before i got it, only code i can make out is along the bottom H.I.D 0712 ( thats writtnen on the casing) and on a sticker in the top riht hand corner Er and than underneath 020611...
Im sure this is the problem as to why the headlights wont turn on, any help much appreciated as to what this box does and wether i can get the lights working without getting a new one

The 'box' you are talking about is the H.I.D Ballast. If its dented i would say thats the cause of the problem. But is it both lights or just the side with the dented ballast?

EDIT: Just looked quickly on ECS. New ones are around 300 - 500 dollars. You better hope that its ok

both sides at the moment, it used to be one side and i could just turn my headlights off and on repeatedly and both would turn on after like 5 or 6 attempts.
dang well i planned on geting the angel eyes of ECS so i might get it sooner
